“#Skateboarding Star Ryan Sheckler Says Filming MTV Show ‘Borderline Traumatized’ Him!

\nIt may have seemed like Ryan Sheckler<\/strong> was on top of the world during his reality TV heyday, but he wasn\u2019t exactly living the dream behind the scenes!<\/p>\n

In fact, the pro skateboarder says he was \u201cborderline traumatized\u201d by how the Life of Ryan<\/em> production team manipulated his romantic relationships for ratings and called him names on set of the MTV<\/strong> show, which aired from 2007 to 2008. During a candid interview on In Depth with Graham Bensigner<\/em>, the now 31-year-old admitted the experience \u201crocked\u201d him to his core, explaining how what was \u201cthe last straw\u201d for him.<\/p>\n

He shared about having to film his love life:<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s already a very intimate piece of your life that you don\u2019t want people to know about or see. So, we break up once and then cameras are on, we break up again, cut. Now, the mood\u2019s really awkward. And then, you know, they come over to me and they\u2019re like, \u2018Hey, that wasn\u2019t enough. We need to do it again.’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Yeah, definitely not a fun experience.<\/p>\n

While these days, most reality stars know what they\u2019re getting themselves into \u2014 using their private relationships as storylines and recreating authentic, real-life moments for the camera \u2014 Ryan says this wasn\u2019t the kind of show he signed up for. He continued:<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd so that\u2019s where the show became acting and it became like this thing where it was like, \u2018This is not what we signed up for and this is not what it started out as.’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The athlete went so far as to say that Life of Ryan<\/em> \u201cbroke my heart\u201d and \u201cborderline traumatized me,\u201d revealing that he \u201cdidn\u2019t get into a relationship after the show until I was 25 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked why, the X Game<\/a>s<\/strong> gold medalist shared:<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to have to go through a breakup again. I have a heart, man, and I have very strong emotions and I do not like hurting people\u2019s feelings\u2026 To blatantly have to hurt people\u2019s feelings over and over again for the sake of television\u2014for ratings literally\u2014no, it rocked me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Hey, not everyone\u2019s cut out for reality showbiz!<\/p>\n

Ryan also took issue with what he described as name-calling on set, sharing that his nickname became \u201ccryin\u2019 Ryan\u201d because the then-teen shed tears after learning about some upsetting family news<\/a>.\u00a0 He explained:<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were making fun of me for crying about hearing that my parents were gonna get divorced, and I heard about it on camera. That was the first time I heard about it. So I cried.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

While it wasn\u2019t the best experience, Ryan acknowledged having his own show was an \u201cincredible opportunity\u201d \u2014 but he\u2019s glad it ended with three seasons.<\/p>\n

He mused:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt served its purpose. I learned the lessons I was supposed to learn from doing it, yeah, I wouldn\u2019t take it back either. Bro, I was 17 years old. I was a kid. I was a kid that got an incredible opportunity, was in a very interesting part of my career, where it just seemed to be going up and up and up, and I figured this was the next best step.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

We\u2019re glad he\u2019s in a better place now!<\/p>\n
