\n Texas State is launching an investigation into men\u2019s head basketball coach Danny Kaspar, who has been accused by two former players of repeatedly hurling racist remarks to the team.<\/p>\n

According to former point guard Jaylen Shead, Kaspar said that his players would run faster if a \u201cbrown man with a [turban] and an AK-47\u201d was there, that a European player needed to improve or he would be deported and that Shead once was \u201crunning like the cops are behind him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shead transferred to Washington State last season after two years at Texas State.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, the experience was shocking,\u201d Shead tweeted. \u201cI could overlook the way coach Kaspar treated players in most regards. I could overlook the lies he fed us to get us there and keep us there. I could overlook the way he disregarded the rules and our health. But I could not turn away from the many racially insensitive things that were said to me and other teammates.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese things happ<\/a>ened so much on a daily bases [sic], we became numb as it was normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kaspar, 65, has been at Texas State since 2013, previously serving as head coach at Stephen F. Austin for 13 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI personally find these allegations deeply troubling,\u201d athletic director Larry Teis said in a statement. \u201cI, and the entire Department of Athletics staff, take the concerns expressed by our former student-athletes very seriously. At my request, the university has launched a formal investigation through the Office of Equal Opportunity and Title IX. It is our top priority to fully cooperate with the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shead, inspired to speak out by the nationwide protests following George Floyd\u2019s death, said Kaspar would tell black players to \u201cchase that chicken\u201d when the coach wanted them to run faster, and told those struggling academically that they would eventually work at Popeyes.<\/p>\n

Former Texas state player Alex Peacock supported Shead\u2019s allegations, saying players stayed silent because they feared the consequences to their basketball careers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no embellishment in what he said,\u201d Peacock told ESPN. \u201cThe first time I heard him tell somebody to \u2018chase that bucket of chicken,\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018Hold on. Being a player, it\u2019s hard to come out when you\u2019re in it, when you\u2019re playing, because you don\u2019t know what the ramifications will be.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Peacock, Kaspar also allegedly told players he could utter slang derived from the N-word, used by players.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe told the black players that if you can use it, I can use it,\u201d Peacock said. \u201cThat\u2019s one of the ones where you\u2019re like, \u2018OK \u2026 no.\u2019 Those are two different meanings than when we use it.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
