Westworld<\/em> creators\u00a0Jonathan Nolan<\/strong> and Lisa Joy<\/strong> are teaming with\u00a0Craig Macneill<\/strong> and Clay Chapman<\/strong>, the team behind the indie horror film\u00a0The Boy<\/em> (no, not the one about the creepy doll, the other one<\/a>), for a new psychological horror anthology series being developed for Amazon. The series is called\u00a0Unknown<\/em><\/strong>, and \u201cplunges into the corners of the American landscape, probing the intersection of folklore and our bloody history of true crime.\u201d The intersection of folklore and our bloody history of true crime is one of my favorite spots to hang out, so this sounds pretty cool to me.<\/p>\n

This news<\/a> comes to us via Deadline, which reports that Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy\u2019s Kilter Films are working with Craig Macneill and Clay Chapman to develop\u00a0Unknown<\/em>, a psychological horror anthology series that \u201cplunges into the corners of the American landscape, probing the intersection of folklore and our bloody history of true crime,\u201d with the first season \u201ccentered around an estranged brother and sister, who return to the Texas Killing Fields, only to encounter a dark spirit that inhabits the region from their childhood.\u201d
\nThe Texas Killing Fields, for those who are unaware, is an area bordering the Calder Oil Field, which is a 25-acre patch of land situated a mile from Interstate Highway 45. Since the 1970s, at least 30 bodies \u2013 mostly young girls and women between the ages of\u00a012\u201325 years \u2013 have been found in the area. Very few of the murders have been solved, and the common belief is that they\u2019re the work of multiple serial killers. In other words, it\u2019s a very good setting for a horror story.<\/p>\n

Macneill and Chapman worked together on the 2015 movie\u00a0The Boy<\/em>. Macneill has also directed episodes of the new Amazon series\u00a0Them<\/em>, as well as\u00a0The Twilight Zone<\/em> and\u00a0Castle Rock<\/em>. He also helmed\u00a0Lizzie<\/em>, a movie about Lizzie Borden starring\u00a0Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart. I quite enjoyed that film, although it seemed like I was in the minority there. Chapman has authored several horror novels, including\u00a0The Remaking<\/em> and the recently published\u00a0Whisper Down the Lane<\/em>. I\u2019ve read\u00a0The Remaking<\/em>, and thought it was a good read.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a sucker for horror anthology stuff, so I\u2019m all-in on\u00a0Unknown<\/em> (although that title is a tad generic, and it would be swell if they thought of something better before it premieres).\u00a0Unknown<\/em> is just the latest Amazon project for Nolan and Joy. They\u2019re also working on an adaptation of\u00a0 William Gibson\u2019s sci-fi thriller The Peripheral<\/em> for the streaming service as well.<\/p>\n
