On April 29, Wisconsin resident Kaitlyn Huber filed a lawsuit<\/a> claiming that the pizza-flavored Bagel Bites don\u2019t actually use real cheese. The suit alleges that the lunchtime staple\u2019s manufacturer, Kraft Heinz, is lying to consumers by including the \u201creal\u201d dairy stamp on its products.<\/a><\/p>\n

The suit states that \u201cthe Product does not contain \u2018real\u2019 mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce, as these foods are understood and expected by consumers.\u201d The complaint also rides on the idea that fillers are used in the bites by the Kraft Heinz Foods Company.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe name, \u2018Mini Bagels with Mozzarella Cheese and Tomato Sauce,\u2019 is deceptive because mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce, as these terms are understood by consumers and regulations, are not present in the Product or are present in an amount less than expected,\u201d the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n

But Kraft Heinz bit back, denying any wrongdoing to their cheesy mini-pizzas. <\/p>\n

\u201cBagel Bites, the perfect bite-sized pizza snack, are made with delicious, high-quality ingredients that our fans know and love,\u201d a Kraft Heinz spokesperson said in a statement<\/a> to\u00a0the \u201cToday\u201d show.\u00a0\u201cWe proudly stand by the food we make, and are focused on bringing great products to market. The lawsuit lacks any merit, and we will strongly defend our brand.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawsuit also alleged that the Bagel Bites\u2019 \u201ccheese blend\u201d includes modified food starch. The suit also contended that cornstarch and methylcellulose are added to the tomato sauce to \u201creduce the amount of tomatoes used by thirty-five percent.\u201d According to Everyday Health<\/a>, methylcellulose is a bulk-forming laxative that increases the amount of water in your stools to help make them softer and easier to pass. It is also used as a thickener and\u00a0emulsifier\u00a0in some food and makeup products.<\/p>\n

Huber is looking for the class-action suit to include Wisconsin, Arkansas and Ohio residents who purchased Bagel Bites. Her lawyer, Spencer Sheehan, told \u201cToday\u201d that her team hopes the lawsuit will result in Kraft Heinz correcting its packaging in the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsumers, especially Wisconsin consumers, know what real mozzarella cheese is and isn\u2019t, and they know that real mozzarella cheese doesn\u2019t contain food starch,\u201d Sheehan said. \u201cThey also know that tomato sauce has real tomatoes.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
