“#’Star Wars’ X-wing makes history as part of Smithsonian exhibit<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The Force will be with you, always, and now it will always be a part of American history.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The National Air and Space Museum announced that it will display an X-wing prop from the 2019 \u201cStar Wars\u201d movie, \u201cThe Rise of Skywalker.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Smithsonian made the announcement on \u201cStar Wars\u201d Day, May the Fourth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The aircraft, which has only ever flown on-screen in a galaxy far, far away, will be part of an exhibit in the museum\u2019s newly renovated building on the National Mall in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n

There is no set date on when \u201cStar Wars\u201d<\/a> fans can see the 37-foot-long vehicle but the Smithsonian says it will be \u201clate\u201d 2022.<\/p>\n

Until then, the starfighter will be reconditioned at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia where visitors can see the spacecraft for free.<\/p>\n

The movie prop is on long-term loan from Lucasfilm.<\/p>\n

The X-wing is the fighter jet that Luke Skywalker famously used to destroy the Death Star in the original 1977 \u201cStar Wars\u201d movie.<\/p>\n

It is a versatile Rebel Alliance starfighter that balances speed and firepower and is armed with four laser cannons and two proton torpedo launchers.<\/p>\n

Margaret Weitekamp, the museum\u2019s space history chairwoman recognized<\/a> the impact \u201cStar Wars\u201d had in sparking interest in space exploration.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite taking place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, \u2018Star Wars\u2019 introduced generations of fans here on Earth to outer space as a setting for adventure and exploration,\u201d she said. \u201cAll air and space milestones begin with inspiration, and science<\/a> fiction so often provides that spark \u2014 the iconic X-wing displayed amid our other spacecraft celebrates the journey from imagination to achievement.\u201d\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
