\n There\u2019s one big reason rookie showrunner Katori Hall chose the world of strip clubs for \u201cP-Valley,\u201d her new Starz series<\/a> premiering Sunday at 8 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a space that has been done wrong in so many different ways,\u201d Hall, 39, tells The Post.\u00a0\u201cI think about the strip club in \u2018The Sopranos\u2019.\u00a0 Oftentimes you had Tony sitting in the front, and women are in the back. All you see is their body or their legs and you don\u2019t even see their faces.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, because we are always entering our story from the perspective of the women, we really were<\/em> walking in a woman\u2019s high-heeled platform shoes though this world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cP-Valley\u201d is an ensemble drama set at Pynk, a strip club in the fictional town of Chucalissa, Miss. The various clashing personalities there include new girl Autumn (Elarica Johnson, \u201cA Discovery of Witches\u201d), who\u2019s fleeing from a mysterious past; veteran Mercedes (Brandee Evans, \u201cLethal Weapon\u201d), the club\u2019s star who\u2019s preparing to leave; flamboyant Uncle Clifford (Nicco Annan, \u201cThis is Us\u201d), who runs the show; and Miss Mississippi (Shannon Thornton, \u201cDynasty\u201d), who\u2019s fleeing domestic abuse.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe dancing that arose out of these spaces has been app<\/a>ropriated by mainstream culture \u2014 that\u2019s why we have J-Lo on a pole during the Superbowl,\u201d says Hall. \u201cOur show is in conversation with a new line of stories that have been helmed by women, written by women [and] that show a complicated version of what strip club culture is like\u00a0 \u2014 [and] laying down the different types of people who participate in this sometimes very exploitative world.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also part of an initiative from Starz to focus on women\u2019s stories in front of and behind the camera that\u2019s resulted in 11 of its 16 current showrunners being women. Much like HBO\u2019s \u201cThe Deuce,\u201d which was set in the porn industry, \u201cP-Valley\u201d is both a portrait of its various characters \u2014 their struggles and home lives both in and out of the club \u2014 and a look at an oft-misunderstood setting.<\/p>\n

The series began its life as a play, written by Hall, that opened in Minneapolis in 2015.\u00a0<\/strong>Hall\u2019s credits as a veteran playwright include Broadway\u2019s \u201cThe Mountaintop,\u201d which co-starred Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett in 2011, but It soon became clear to her that \u201cP-Valley\u201d should be her first jump from the stage to the small screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up down South,\u201d says the Memphis-born Hall, who currently lives in New York. \u201cAnd I actually visited strip clubs all the time. I would say it\u2019s part of your coming-of-age experience as a black woman now, where you go to birthday parties at strip clubs or you want to hang out with friends, bachelorette parties, bachelor parties. The women [in the clubs] are like heroes \u2014 fierce, flexible.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou grow up appreciating the women not always for how they look, but also for what their bodies can do,\u201dshe says. \u201cI started researching the craft of pole dancing and started talking to a lot of women who dance at clubs from New York City to Atlanta to LA. And all of that research culminated in a play\u2026When I saw it up on the stage, I was like, \u2018This three-hour-long sprawling, 25-lead play is actually a TV show!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Unlike other shows and movies that feature similar settings, almost everyone behind the camera in \u201cP-Valley\u201d is a woman. All eight episodes of the hour-long drama have female directors.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was really interested in interpreters who understood the female gaze. I gravitated towards artists who understood the historical representation of the female body in media<\/a>,\u201d Hall says. \u201cWe felt as though we were creating a new space and carving out new real estate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere aren\u2019t a lot of black female showrunners out there \u2014 particularly in the premium cable space,\u201d she says. \u201cSo I count myself really blessed to have been given that opportunity and I hope I can keep on doing it.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
