They\u2019re all the rage. <\/p>\n

Hollywood has devised an unorthodox way to combat the industrywide epidemic of horrible bosses: hiring rage coaches. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou say what is acceptable and what is not,\u201d Carole Kirschner, head of the Writers Guild of America\u2019s showrunner training program, told the Hollywood Reporter<\/a> (THR) of the new anti-bullying initiative. She was recruited to train scribes who have never been managers on how to run a writers\u2019 room sans succumbing to creative megalomania. <\/p>\n

Unfortunately, of late, Tinseltown has been plagued by allegations of tyrannical leadership, notable examples of which have included accusations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, Ellen DeGeneres\u2019 purported despotic conduct on the set of her eponymous show, and producer Scott Rudin\u2019s alleged \u201cunhinged\u201d conduct<\/a> that reportedly includes chucking computers at employees he deems to be incompetent. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a survey of the British film and TV industry discovered that 84 percent of employees had either witnessed or experienced bullying or harassment, THR reported. The latter were twice as likely to want to quit the industry and faced a high probability of suffering from poor mental health.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople leave organizations now because of their bosses, not because of pay and compensation,\u201d observed executive coach Lacey Leone McLaughlin.<\/p>\n

This alarming trend runs counter to other job sectors, where workplace culture seems to be improving, partially due to the influx of bullying-averse millennials in the workforce.<\/p>\n

Many chalk up Hollywood\u2019s nepotism to an unprecedented explosion in TV script<\/a>s due to the plethora of streaming platforms. In turn, writers have increasingly found themselves in management positions sans any leadership experience, which can increase the likelihood of workplace bullying. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s where rage coaching comes in.<\/p>\n

To curb narcissistic tendencies, Kirschner said it\u2019s important to establish early on what is and is not \u201ctolerated,\u201d with the Tinseltown trainer noting, \u201cYou don\u2019t wait until a problem happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people are missing some of those empathy genes,\u201d lamented Randy Spelling, who coaches Hollywood executives and is himself the son of late TV producer Aaron Spelling. He stressed the importance of \u201cbody language, facial expressions, learning how to gauge what\u2019s happening with other people.\u201d The anger-management professional also teaches industry bigwigs how to be calm and composed, rather than reactive. <\/p>\n

Rage coaches come from a variety of different backgrounds \u2014 including consultants and former CEOs \u2014 and include both entertainment industry insiders and outsiders. Top-flight executive coaches can charge a flat rate of anywhere from $20,000 to $110,000 for six months, according to THR.<\/p>\n

Those who shun coaching risk getting canceled, according to experts. <\/p>\n

\u201cA person who is looking to save face is not really interested in changing,\u201d said Mike Bayer, a former drug and alcohol counselor who now coaches \u201cdifficult\u201d entertainers. \u201cBut the issue has gotten better, because people have become afraid of being canceled or losing their careers.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s especially noteworthy, as social media<\/a> has allowed watchdogs to expose industry bullies in a way that wouldn\u2019t have been possible 20 years ago. Case in point: \u201cAvengers\u201d creator Joss Whedon facing accusations on Twitter of allegedly sexually harassing actors and engaging in \u201ctoxic\u201d behavior on the set of his \u201cBuffy the Vampire Slayer\u201d series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBullies used to be OK in Hollywood,\u201d said Kirschner. \u201cThe sun is setting on them. It\u2019s long overdue, and I don\u2019t think we\u2019re going to go backward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, entrepreneur training isn\u2019t just about deterring bad behavior. Cynthia Oredugba, who offers group coaching for members of the organization Women in Animation, told THR she frequently helps successful clients who feel undeserving of their positions of power, an affliction that predominantly affects minority and female clients.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of my clients got a very impressive position and felt an impostor syndrome,\u201d said Oredugba, who became the first African American woman to join William Morris as an agent trainee in the 1970s. She added, \u201cSo we worked on that, and she ended up really catapulting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Business training as a whole is projected to become an $11.6 billion industry in 2021. However, it\u2019s predominantly the entertainment sphere that\u2019s calling for coaching. <\/p>\n

\u201cRarely do I have a person in automotive reach out and say, \u2018I want to make the automotive industry better,\u2019 \u201d said coach McLaughlin. \u201cBut [in media and entertainment], people are saying to me, \u2018I want to leave the industry better than I found it.\u2019 \u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
