Roberts, <em>The Official Droughtlander Podcast<\/em>, features interviews between Roberts and special guests in which they share behind-the-scenes secrets. In the first episode, Roberts and fellow executive producer Maril Davis spilled some facts about <em>Outlander<\/em>\u2018s TV history, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Below, we\u2019re breaking down all of the interesting facts you might want to know more about.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Outlander_the_Movie\"><\/span><strong><em>Outlander<\/em> the Movie? <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Roberts revealed that early on in his career, he\u2019d been tasked to read a few of the <em>Outlander <\/em>books. \u201cI did a pass for this production house because they wanted to make a TV movie,\u201d he said, adding that \u201cyou wouldn\u2019t be able to get the richness of the novels in that short of time.\u201d So, instead, Roberts walked down to Davis\u2019 office, \u201cI gave you the books and next thing you know, here we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Starting_From_Scratch_in_Scotland\"><\/span><strong>Starting From Scratch in Scotland<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWhen we first got to Scotland way back in 2013\u2026 there was nothing there,\u201d Davis recalled. \u201cObviously, we wanted to film in Scotland because that\u2019s where the books take place, but as you know,\u201d she said to Roberts, \u201cit\u2019s very rare that you get to actually film something in the actual location.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_997838\" style=\"width: 865px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-997838\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-997838\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/sam-heughan-as-jamie-fraser-caitriona-balfe-as-claire-randall-fraser-season-1b-2-2-855x570.jpg\" alt=\"outlander season 1 sam heughan caitriona balfe\" width=\"855\" height=\"570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/sam-heughan-as-jamie-fraser-caitriona-balfe-as-claire-randall-fraser-season-1b-2-2-855x570.jpg 855w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/sam-heughan-as-jamie-fraser-caitriona-balfe-as-claire-randall-fraser-season-1b-2-2-434x289.jpg 434w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/sam-heughan-as-jamie-fraser-caitriona-balfe-as-claire-randall-fraser-season-1b-2-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/sam-heughan-as-jamie-fraser-caitriona-balfe-as-claire-randall-fraser-season-1b-2-2-234x155.jpg 234w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/sam-heughan-as-jamie-fraser-caitriona-balfe-as-claire-randall-fraser-season-1b-2-2-570x380.jpg 570w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/sam-heughan-as-jamie-fraser-caitriona-balfe-as-claire-randall-fraser-season-1b-2-2.jpg 2028w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 855px) 100vw, 855px\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-997838\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Credit: Starz)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Luckily the production team was really driven despite the fact that Scotland didn\u2019t have much of an infrastructure for filming. \u201cWe took an old cell phone warehouse,\u201d Davis revealed, \u201cand it was just gutted. I do remember walking in there and thinking, \u2018how is this gonna become a studio?&#8217;\u201d Ultimately it did, and the show\u2019s production in Scotland has allowed for plenty of job creation and opportunities, they\u2019ve even retained about 95 percent of their original crew since the show began.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Adapting_Over_Time\"><\/span><strong>Adapting Over Time<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When it comes to bringing Jamie and Claire\u2019s story to life, \u201cthe more you continue, the more difficult it gets,\u201d Davis shared. Another challenge is when the cast is unavailable, one example the executive producers point out is Laura Donnelly who portrayed Jamie\u2019s sister Jenny Murray. Since she\u2019s a character who has recurred occasionally over time, securing a contract is difficult, and so storylines involving her might be harder to include in the show.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Most_Difficult_Scenes_to_Produce\"><\/span><strong>Most Difficult Scenes to Produce<br \/><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Among some of the more difficult moments to capture on camera were \u201coddly enough, the buffalo scene from last season,\u201d Roberts said. It was a challenge since filming had to take place partially on a buffalo farm, rather than at the Fraser\u2019s Ridge set.
