As Universal continues to revive its classic monsters, several different titles have been announced. One such title is\u00a0Renfield<\/em><\/strong>, a movie focused on Dracula\u2019s bug-eating minion. And according to producer Robert Kirkman<\/strong>,\u00a0Renfield<\/em> is going to be a bit different from the other upcoming Universal movies<\/a>. For one thing, it\u2019s being described as an \u201cextremely violent comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the Dark Universe crashed and burned, it looked like Universal was truly clueless about what to do with its classic monsters. Then came Leigh Whannell\u2019s\u00a0The Invisible Man<\/em>. The film was a big hit with audiences and critics alike, and it showed that you\u00a0could<\/em> bring these characters into the modern era if you hired someone who knows what they\u2019re doing.
\nSince\u00a0The Invisible Man<\/em> hit theaters, Universal has announced several different monster-related projects. There\u2019s a new\u00a0Dracula<\/em> from Karyn Kusama; there\u2019s\u00a0The Invisible Woman<\/em> from Elizabeth Banks; Ryan Gosling is starring in a new take on\u00a0The Wolfman<\/em>, which is being directed by\u00a0Invisible Man<\/em> helmer Leigh Whannell;\u00a0Paul Feig\u2019s Dark Army<\/em>, which is said to feature classic Universal monsters; The Monster Mash, which is a musical that we don\u2019t know much about just yet; an untitled film produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller starring Channing Tatum; and more.<\/p>\n

Another one of the titles is\u00a0Renfield<\/em>, a\u00a0Dracula<\/em>-adjacent film focused on the bug-eating lunatic who has a connection with Dracula in Bram Stoker\u2019s novel, and who was played memorably by\u00a0Dwight Frye in the 1931\u00a0Dracula<\/em> movie and Tom Waits in\u00a0Bram Stoker\u2019s Dracula<\/em>. Renfield is a memorable, but minor, character, which means he\u2019s going to need some fleshing out for his own movie.<\/p>\n

The Tomorrow War<\/em> filmmaker\u00a0Chris McKay<\/strong> is in talks to direct the\u00a0Renfield<\/em> movie, with\u00a0Rick and Morty<\/em>\u00a0writer Ryan Ridley<\/strong> tackling the script<\/a>. The idea for the film came from a pitch by\u00a0Robert Kirkman, who is also producing the film. During an appearance on\u00a0Kevin Smith\u2019s\u00a0Fat Man Beyond<\/a>\u00a0(via Coming Soon<\/a>), Kirkman shed some more light on what we can expect from the movie.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re doing this cool movie for Universal that\u2019s a focus on Renfield,\u201d Kirkman said. \u201cIt\u2019s a story about him being Dracula\u2019s henchman and how shitty a job that is. It\u2019s a fun, extremely violent comedy because I\u2019ve got a crutch, and it\u2019s violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

A comedy about Renfield being shitty at his job as Dracula\u2019s henchman is a pretty damn funny idea, and my interest in this has just risen considerably. I also like knowing that Universal is willing to be flexible with these films, and not force them all into one mold \u2013 some can be horror, some can be comedies, some can be musicals. You\u2019re dealing with supernatural monsters \u2013 the sky\u2019s the limit here. Go nuts!
