\"Faces<\/a><\/p>\n

Faces of Death<\/em><\/strong>, the controversial movie that claimed to feature footage of actual gruesome deaths \u2013 most of which were, in fact, faked \u2013 is getting a Hollywood upgrade. Legendary will make a\u00a0Faces of Death<\/em> reimagining with\u00a0Isa Mazzei<\/strong> and Daniel Goldhaber<\/strong>, the team behind the indie horror movie\u00a0Cam<\/em>. The story involves a YouTube<\/a> moderator who discovers a group of people recreating the deaths from the original movie.<\/p>\n

If you grew up in the era of video stores, you probably know all about\u00a0Faces of Death<\/em> \u2013 even if you never rented a copy. The VHS cover art was designed to shock and titillate, featuring a leering skull and boasting a claim that the film was \u201cbanned in 40+ countries!\u201d It gained infamy as something akin to a snuff film, but here\u2019s the twist: most of the death in the movie was fake, staged with make-up effects. And while the film was banned in some places, it definitely was\u00a0not<\/em> banned in 40+ countries. It was all a rouse to make\u00a0Faces of Death<\/em> all the more shocking, and thus more app<\/a>ealing to the morbidly curious.
\nWritten and directed by John Alan Schwartz, the original film took the form of a faux-documentary where a pathologist named Francis B. Gr\u00f6ss (played by actor Michael Carr) presents the audience with a cavalcade of disturbing footage showing different gruesome ways of death, from various sources. While there were a few bits of genuine footage in the film \u2013 there\u2019s the aftermath of a deadly car accident that\u2019s real, for instance \u2013 the bulk of the movie consists of staged moments.<\/p>\n

That didn\u2019t matter, though. As the saying goes, \u201cWhen the legend becomes fact, print the legend.\u201d And the legend of\u00a0Faces of Death<\/em> far outweighed its actual content. The cult appeal was so much that several sequels were spawned \u2013\u00a0Faces of Death II<\/em> (1981), Faces of Death III<\/em> (1985), The Worst of Faces of Death<\/em> (1987), Faces of Death IV<\/em> (1990), Faces of Death V<\/em> (1995) Faces of Death VI<\/em> (1996).<\/p>\n

Now, Legendary wants to turn this whole idea into a feature film. Per THR<\/a>, producers\u00a0Susan Montford and Don Murphy of Angry Films are working with\u00a0Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber, the team behind\u00a0Cam<\/em>, on a film that will \u201crevolve\u00a0around a female moderator of a YouTube-like website, whose job is to weed out offensive and violent content and who herself is recovering from a serious trauma, that stumbles across a group that is recreating the murders from the original film. But in the story primed for the digital age and age of online misinformation, the question faced is are the murders real or fake?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mazzei will direct and Goldhaber will handle the script. The story of the film comes from\u00a0Mazzei, Goldhaber, and Isabelle Link-Levy<\/strong>. And believe it or not, this isn\u2019t the first time Hollywood tried to dip into\u00a0Faces of Death<\/em>. Back in 2006, producers Murphy and Montford (along with\u00a0Rick Benattar) announced they were remaking\u00a0Faces of Death<\/em>, and brought on filmmaker\u00a0J.T. Petty. Petty helmed the excellent faux-documentary\u00a0S&MAN<\/em> (pronounced\u00a0Sandman<\/em>), in which Petty investigates the world of underground horror and discovers someone who may be making\u00a0real<\/em> snuff films. Based on\u00a0S&MAN<\/em>, Petty seemed like a pretty great choice to helm\u00a0Faces of Death<\/em>, but that version never came together. Now, it\u2019s time to try again. And I\u2019m interested! I kind of dig that plot synopsis, and I\u2019m curious to see how this one pans out.<\/p>\n
