“#Jessica Barden’s personal journey mirrored in ‘Pink Skies Ahead’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cPink Skies Ahead\u201d star Jessica Barden has a personal connection to the movie \u2014 and its focus on mental health awareness.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the time I was making the movie I was like everybody else, a typical kid in their 20s [and] I definitely knew I had anxiety,\u201d Barden, 28, told The Post. \u201cI thought, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m just this anxious person, I get nervous\u2026get these adrenaline rushes.\u2019 People were like, \u2018You\u2019re so confident, you have so many friends, how can you have anxiety and be an actress?<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I knew I was having anxiety attacks as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPink Skies Ahead\u201d airs Saturday at 9 p.m. on MTV and sister network Pop TV as part of MTV\u2019s \u201cMental Health is Health\u201d initiative. It\u2019s based on Kelly Oxford\u2019s book, \u201cWhen You Find Out the World is Against You\u201d (Oxford also directs).<\/p>\n

The British-born Barden plays Winona, a 20-year-old living in 1998 LA with her loving parents, dad Richard (Michael McKean) and artsy mom Pamela (Marcia Gay Harden). Winona, an aspiring writer, dropped out of college and is working a dull desk job in her father\u2019s office \u2014 while driving him back and forth from work using her learner\u2019s permit (she\u2019s flunked her driving test several times). She parties with her friends Stephanie (Odeya Rush) and Addie (Rosa Salazar), drinks a lot of slushies and starts dating an older PhD student, Ben (Lewis Pullman) \u2014 but seems stuck in neutral. <\/p>\n

Winona feels a lump under her armpit and visits her pediatrician (!) Dr. Cotton (Henry Winkler), who diagnoses her recurrent aches and pains as an anxiety disorder. She\u2019s skeptical; she\u2019s never had a panic attack and doesn\u2019t feel depressed, but takes Dr. Cotton\u2019s advice and visits a therapist, Dr. Monroe (Mary K. Blige) \u2014 admitting, through tears, her \u201cdeepest, darkest\u201d secret: \u201cI think I\u2019m an a\u2013hole.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think our generation has gotten to the point where [mental health issues] are more open and you get help,\u201d Barden said. \u201cIt\u2019s accepted that you have a therapist and that some people will take medication. It\u2019s no big deal. It\u2019s whatever your mess is to get there, and I think part of the movie is telling you that it\u2019s fine to be like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Determined to move forward, Winona gets a job at a clothing store and, on her first day, melts down \u2014 having a panic attack she blames on too much coffee. \u201cThat scene resonated with me the most\u2026that used to happ<\/a>en to me so much, not passing out, but I\u2019d be in an audition and start talking and not thinking about anything and in the middle of a scene I\u2019d be like, \u2018Whoa, why do I feel like I\u2019m going to pass out?\u2019 That happened for, like, two years and I had no idea what was happening. I thought, maybe I didn\u2019t eat enough \u2014 but I was having panic attacks and just didn\u2019t know it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the middle of conversations I would forget how to breathe,\u201d she said. \u201cI used to have stage fright and no one ever knew. It\u2019s crazy what your brain does. I would never forget a line\u2026but inside, every single part of my brain was ringing. It was wild.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barden said that what Winona experiences in \u201cPink Skies Ahead\u201d vis a vis her internal emotions and thoughts is a common part of life \u2014 whatever your age group.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe feels like, \u2018Why can\u2019t I pass my driver\u2019s test, I don\u2019t know what I really want to do at college or at a job \u2014 I have no idea what\u2019s going on. I\u2019m so horrid; I\u2019m a failure. I\u2019m trying and I don\u2019t get it.\u2019 She\u2019s completely confused about herself, but viewers will think, \u2018That\u2019s actually fine. Your life is OK, you just don\u2019t like yourself.\u2019 They can understand that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they\u2019re going to see Winona go on a journey of trying to be calmer and not placing so much pressure on herself,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re 20, there is so much pressure on you and that doesn\u2019t need to exist. Her focus stops being, \u2018How do I distract myself and silence everything and make the most noise\u2019 and she realizes that it\u2019s OK to listen to the noises inside your head, it\u2019s OK to have a bad week, it\u2019s OK to have no idea what you want to do with your life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe journey is in not distracting yourself, in learning to be present in your life,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople can go their whole lives without realizing that.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
