{"id":245215,"date":"2021-05-08T00:26:08","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T21:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/why-the-plushies-are-so-popular\/"},"modified":"2021-05-08T00:26:08","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T21:26:08","slug":"why-the-plushies-are-so-popular","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/why-the-plushies-are-so-popular\/","title":{"rendered":"#Why the plushies are so popular"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Why the plushies are so popular<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The first time teen influencer Lexia Hayden saw a TikTok video featuring a Squishmallow plush stuffed animal, she knew she had to have one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love their faces, I love how soft they are and I think it\u2019s so cool how on TikTok the videos always show how someone\u2019s Squishmallow matches their room,\u201d said Hayden, 14, who lives in New York City and posts pics of herself and her collection of \u201cplushies\u201d to her 260,000 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lexiahayden\/?hl=en\">Instagram followers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I love is that the shape is so <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ealing \u2014 there are no edges,\u201d said Lexia\u2019s mom Adele. \u201cLexia is always cuddling with hers when she\u2019s doing homework or reading \u2014 it\u2019s like a stuffed animal that really curls into your body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since 2017 when Kellytoy in Vernon, California first introduced Squishmallows to the toy market, more than 82 million have been sold. They range in price from $10 to $100 and come in a wide variety of products, from keychains to a 24-inch beanbag-sized plush. And while you can buy them on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/squishmallows\/s?k=squishmallows&amp;tag=nypost-20\">Amazon<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walmart.com\/browse\/toys\/squishmallows-stuffed-animals\/4171_2724815_4775446\">Walmart <\/a>or at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.costco.com\/plush-toys.html\">Costco<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.claires.com\/us\/toys-and-collectibles\/whats-hot\/squishmallows\/\">Claire\u2019s<\/a> (or via the competitive resale market on<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/b\/Kellytoy-Stuffed-Animals\/436\/bn_1920452\"> eBay<\/a> and Etsy if you\u2019re looking for a limited-edition plush), the specialty stores, especially, can barely keep them in stock once they hit shelves.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-nypost-inline-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" alt=\"Upper East Side teen Lexia Hayden with one of her many Squishmallows.\" class=\"wp-image-18184428 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/lexia-hayden.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/lexia-hayden.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/lexia-hayden.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/lexia-hayden.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=600 600w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><figcaption>Upper East Side teen Lexia Hayden with one of her many Squishmallows.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">courtesy Lexia Hayden @lexiahayd<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Take what happened at a local New York City kids\u2019 store: A few weeks ago, a massive line formed outside Lester\u2019s on the Upper East Side after customers got the alert via the store\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>-media sites that 400 of the fluffy faves were stocked and ready to be sold.<\/p>\n<p>Every single one sold out within two days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoms and kids of all ages, from as young as five to pre-teens, were grabbing whichever ones they could and buying whatever they could get their hands on,\u201d said Sabrina Cedeno, manager of the Upper East Side store, adding that there will be another Squishmallow shipment mid-May and monthly sales thereafter. \u201cIt didn\u2019t even matter which ones were the most popular.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If this reminds you of the Beanie Baby \u2014 or Furby \u2014 craze of the \u201990s, Jackie Cucco, senior editor at the Toy Insider, a go-to source for toy reviews, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> and info, would agree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think these are so popular because of their collectability factor,\u201d said Cucco, who admits to having 30 Squishmallows herself. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have this squishy marshmallow-looking plush with a simple embroidered face and there are over 1,000 different characters and each has its own fandom. There are constant new releases, too, like their new line of food-themed styles like a burrito and hamburger, and a new collaboration with Hello Kitty, that makes it exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The social media buzz is helping too. To date there have been to 2 billion-plus TikTok video views on Squishmallows-related hashtags, including more than 1.1 billion views on #squishmallows alone, according to a company spokesperson.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFans go hunting for them and it\u2019s a big win when they can find the character they\u2019re looking for. People go crazy hunting them down,\u201d Cucco said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-instagram wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram\"\/>Lindsay Grace, 24, who goes by \u201cSquishy\u201d online, has managed to squeeze \u201cmore than 500\u201d of the soft sweeties into her Queens home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re all over my apartment,\u201d said the FIT student, who chronicles the travails of her toys on the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/squishmallowlovers\/\">@squishmallowlovers<\/a> Instagram account. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI put them in little floating shelves, they\u2019re like little decorations, though I will say that some of them end up in bins. There\u2019s just not enough room in my apartment so I put away the Christmas and Halloween ones and then I put them back out at those holidays. Her favorite even shares her name: \u201cLucille the seal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe animals fit in there so nicely,\u201d said Brathwaite, who now lives in Hell\u2019s Kitchen. \u201cIt gives her the feeling that I\u2019m in the bed with her and, when she rolls over, she spoons the animals. It\u2019s adorable!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe they are onto something: Squishmallow groupies are even crediting them with helping them get some rest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have trouble falling asleep and just sleeping with them has helped me feel comfortable,\u201d said Sophie Clair, 19, who lives on the Upper East Side and sleeps with her two Squishmallows. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re so soft and squishy. They make you feel so much better.
