The new \u201cwoke\u201d generation of the \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d cast is armed with social media<\/a> accounts \u2014 and not afraid to use them.<\/p>\n

When it was announced that billionaire Elon Musk would be hosting this weekend, several of them took shots online.<\/p>\n

But an industry source who knows the show intimately told The Post: \u201cThe new cast are getting a little too big for their britches.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey can tweet and do whatever they want on social media \u2026 they weren\u2019t told to take down their messages.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Musk tweeted: \u201cLet\u2019s find out just how live Saturday Night Live really is,\u201d Bowen Yang replied: \u201cWhat the f\u2013k does this even mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, writer and featured player Andrew Dismukes posted on Instagram: \u201cOnly CEO I want to do a sketch with is Cher-E Oteri,\u201d with a photo of \u201cSNL\u201d alum Cheri Oteri.<\/p>\n

Longtime cast member Aidy Bryant shared a message that many perceived to be a dig at Musk, too: She retweeted Sen. Bernie Sanders calling it a \u201cmoral obscenity\u201d that \u201cthe 50 wealthiest people in America today own more wealth than the bottom half of our people.\u201d (As of Friday, Musk was worth $166.7 billion, according to Forbes<\/a> \u2014\u00a0putting him not far behind Jeff Bezos as world\u2019s richest person.)<\/p>\n

As Page Six reported, cast members were told if they had any issues, they didn\u2019t have to participate in the episode<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018SNL\u2019 is very insulated,\u201d an NBC source told The Post. \u201cLorne protects his cast \u2014 they don\u2019t feel like part of the wider company.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018The new cast are getting a little too big for their britches.\u2019<\/p>\n

Industry source<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n

It\u2019s an unusual workplace arrangement: The Post has confirmed that if any cast member does sit out a show, they still get paid.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they were elsewhere, they would have been suspended [for tweeting], but they can do whatever they want. Lorne has never said to anybody they have to turn up for a show,\u201d said the industry source of the cast. \u201cThere\u2019s no repercussions. So stop it with the hysterical reactions.\u201d<\/p>\n

If the comedians think they have any sway over who is asked to be a guest, they\u2019re wrong.<\/p>\n

James Andrew Miller, who penned the book \u201cLive From New York\u201d about the NBC show that launched in 1975, told The Post: \u201cNot everyone [on the show] agrees about what is funny or who should host, but Lorne is the decision maker and the buck stops with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere have been a handful of times where cast members have wanted him to rescind the guest choice or musical guest. And with social media it\u2019s easy to say something, then suddenly realize, \u2018Maybe I went too far,’\u201d Miller said. (Both Bryant and Yang deleted their Musk tweets.)<\/p>\n

\u201cThe truth is,\u201d Miller added, \u201cthere isn\u2019t a set of orthodoxies one has to embrace to be host of \u2018SNL.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Back in February 2013, an 18-year-old Justin Bieber hosted for the first time \u2014 against the wishes of many of the cast who thought he was an entitled pop star, The Post is told.<\/p>\n

\u201cSNL\u201d vets Jay Pharoah and Bill Hader later confirmed on the Bravo show \u201cWatch What Happ<\/a>ens Live!\u201d that the singer was the worst guest host<\/a> of their era.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, we both know, dog,\u201d said Pharoah to Hader.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, it was Bieber,\u201d Hader responded.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe just was in a bad place \u2026 Maybe he\u2019s in a better place, but back then he was in a very\u2014it was rough,\u201d added Hader of the singer. \u201cEverybody\u2019s usually on great behavior \u2026 He just seemed, like, exhausted or just at the end of a rope.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Post is also told that members of the cast were also unhappy that country music star Morgan Wallen was allowed to make his \u201cSNL\u201d debut in December, two months after his initial invitation was rescinded for breaking the show\u2019s quarantine rules. (Wallen was\u00a0photographed kissing multiple college women and partying maskless in Alabama when he was supposed to be on lockdown.)<\/p>\n

And while, for most of \u201cSNL\u201d history, cast members have kept quiet if they were unhappy with a guest, there is a precedent of protest.<\/p>\n

In 1990, cast member Nora Dunn refused to appear on an episode hosted by comedian Andrew Dice Clay.<\/p>\n

Years later, she told Salon<\/a>: \u201cAnd then there\u2019s Andrew Dice Clay, the character, who was an abuser of women and he was a homophobe. And his material was terrible. He just wasn\u2019t smart enough to handle that material. And our writing staff was not the writing staff to handle that material either [for him to host the show]. Lorne said, \u2018Andrew Dice Clay was a phenomenon worth examining.\u2019 \u2026 We didn\u2019t examine the hosts of\u00a0\u2018SNL.\u2019\u00a0We supported them, we wrote for them, and we made them look good. Otherwise you\u2019d never get a host. You\u2019re there to make them look good.\u201d<\/p>\n

But her refusal didn\u2019t exactly make Dunn popular with castmates. Jon Lovitz called it a \u201cbetrayal\u201d and accused her of making the cast \u201clook like we were sell-outs for doing the show with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

No one this season has gone that far, but some of the cast members have said things that show the show is divided.<\/p>\n

On \u201cLate Night With Seth Meyers,\u201d\u00a0Michael Che said of Musk<\/a>: \u201cHe\u2019s the richest man in the world, how could you not be excited for that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Pete Davidson agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just don\u2019t understand why this is the dude everyone\u2019s so freaked out about,\u201d Davidson said on radio show \u201cThe Breakfast Club.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018What did he do?\u2019 He\u2019s just like a really wealthy businessman that makes, like, nerd s\u2013t. I don\u2019t know. He\u2019s really nice. I\u2019m excited.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davidson has claimed that comedy is \u201cgetting destroyed\u201d because of outrage over button-pushing jokes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe second you open your mouth and have an opinion, you lose money today,\u201d Davidson told Paper Magazine<\/a>. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t think that\u2019s a safe place to live in.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Donald Trump hosted \u201cSNL\u201d in November 2015 while running for president, behind the scenes the cast made no secret that they were unhappy.<\/p>\n

The episode won the show its best ratings in six years, but one TV source said: \u201cNo one refused to do the show, but they made it no secret they didn\u2019t want him there \u2014 and you could see that they felt uncomfortable\u00a0alongside him on air.\u201d<\/p>\n

The senior NBC source confirmed that \u201cthe cast weren\u2019t happy about Trump. They didn\u2019t want him on the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s easy to think the show skews to the left, Miller said: \u201cIt\u2019s not a liberal think tank. It\u2019s a comedy show, a culture show.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYears ago, people thought \u2018SNL\u2019 was too hard on Clinton or made too much fun of Democratic candidates,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cSNL\u201d will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025 and although Michaels, now 76, has said he will \u201cwander off\u201d after that, the senior NBC source said: \u201cI\u2019ve had no conversations with him about retiring. He certainly shows no desire to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

The source added: \u201cEvery generation of \u2018SNL\u2019 cast is different. I think Lorne is one of the best at finding talent. To watch his genius behind the scenes is incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cComedy has become more generational.\u00a0Humor has evolved and that\u2019s what has the impact \u2014 not the comedians.\u201d<\/p>\n

The industry source added: \u201cNone of the original cast were exactly shrinking violets \u2026 if Bill Murray or John Belushi had social media\u00a0back then, they would not be afraid to express their opinions.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
