A Sherpa guide scaled Mount Everest for a record 25th time on Friday, breaking the previous record, which he had also set.<\/p>\n

Kami Rita and 11 other Sherpas summited the mountain at around 6 p.m., a tourism official said, as reported<\/a> by The Associated Press.<\/p>\n

The group was this year\u2019s first to reach the summit in 2021. They climbed the mountain to fix the route\u2019s ropes so others can follow.<\/p>\n

Rita first scaled the world\u2019s highest mountain (elevation 29,032 feet) in 1994. His father was among the first Sherpa guides.<\/p>\n

The Chinese-Nepalese border crosses the mountain\u2019s summit. The mountain was closed on both sides last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Nepal has granted climbing permits for 408 foreigners this year. China will allow \u201ca few dozen,\u201d who will be tested and must social<\/a>ly distance on the way up.<\/p>\n
