“#Mets\u2019 Michael Wacha threw in parking lot during coronavirus break<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Jacob deGrom pitched a simulated game<\/a> Thursday and looked sharp over three innings, but if the Mets plan on contending this season, they will need contributions from their entire rotation \u2014 which is where Michael Wacha comes in.<\/p>\n

The right-hander is one of the Mets starters looking for a bounce-back season \u2014 along with fellow free-agent signee Rick Porcello \u2014 and felt he was in a good spot when spring training was halted in mid-March due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Now, Wacha is trying to get ready for a truncated season set to begin in just over two weeks.<\/p>\n

Though he has been at Citi Field and Clover Park in Port St. Lucie when he could, Wacha also took his preparation on the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d play catch with some other players in the area at random ball fields, when we weren\u2019t getting kicked out of them,\u2019\u2019 Wacha said. \u201cBut it was tough staying in shape, trying to find the resources we needed to stay at a high level when we came back.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was the park where he met Robert Gsellman on occasion that was between Port St. Lucie and where Gsellman was in Jupiter.<\/p>\n

\u201cA ranger would kick us off the field and we said, \u2018Where are we supposed to throw?\u2019 \u201d Wacha said Thursday.<\/p>\n

Told the field was off limits, they asked if they could use the parking lot, so that\u2019s what they did.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe threw there for about a week and then they [relaxed] rules,\u2019\u2019 Wacha said. \u201cCrazy times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wacha\u2019s travel<\/a>s next took him to Palm Beach, when Gsellman invited him to Eric Cressey\u2019s performance center.<\/p>\n

The setting has become the stuff of legend, as a collection of All-Stars, from Max Scherzer to Justin Verlander to Giancarlo Stanton, all worked out.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Gsellman] said we had some bullpens and catchers to throw to,\u2019\u2019 Wacha said. \u201cHe opened the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wacha called the experience of being around those players \u201cvery beneficial.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a very cool experience,\u2019\u2019 Wacha said. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely been a wild time.\u201d<\/p>\n

And it left Wacha confident he will be ready when the season begins.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t have been happ<\/a>ier with everything I was able to get my hands on and had access to during quarantine,\u2019\u2019 Wacha said.<\/p>\n

He will be part of a rotation that includes deGrom, who threw 42 pitches Thursday and is on track to start Opening Day, as well as Marcus Stroman, Rick Porcello and Steven Matz \u2014 with Noah Syndergaard out for the season following Tommy John surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve just been preparing to come in and be a starter and to try eat up as many innings as I can,\u2019\u2019 Wacha said. \u201cI\u2019ll be good and be ready to take the ball whenever I\u2019m asked.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mets intend to use a traditional five-man rotation, which is what Wacha is building toward, but he knows this season could mean something different for some starting pitchers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve heard six-man and a three-man [rotation] to ride guys for a shorter season,\u2019\u2019 Wacha said. \u201cI\u2019ll be in communication with the staff here.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeGrom, who allowed just one run Thursday, figures to get one more sim-game start and an exhibition game against the Yankees before the Mets open the year against Atlanta in Queens. While he and Stroman will lead the staff, even in a shortened season, rotational depth will be important.<\/p>\n

Wacha says he\u2019s ready.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ball had been coming out well,\u2019\u2019 Wacha said of how he felt this spring. \u201cI was pretty bummed out about getting shut down so close to the [regular] season. But I\u2019ve been able to build on my mechanics and I\u2019ve been happy with how I\u2019m feeling.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
