Twitch users are outraged over a new trend on the gaming-centric streaming platform, in which female streamers sit half-naked in hot tubs while chatting with viewers. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat in the actual f\u2013k happ<\/a>ened to Twitch\u2026?!\u201d tweeted one detractor<\/a> of the controversial phenomenon. The practice exploded in popularity following the 2018 debut of the \u201cJust Chatting\u201d feature, which permitted Twitch users to speak directly with audiences, Insider reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dubbed \u201chot tub meta,\u201d the trend entails scantily clad women earning cash by sitting in hot tubs while playing video game<\/a>s or even just responding to messages in real time, the Sun reported<\/a>. Some opportunistic streamers even invite users to digitally alter their bikinis as if creating a character on \u201cSkyrim.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Twitcher Kaitlyn \u201cAmouranth\u201d Siragusa has amassed 500,000 followers since March by charging viewers $50 to write their names on her body during her hot tub sessions.<\/p>\n

\u201cHot tub meta\u201d has likely helped \u201cJust Chatting\u201d become Twitch\u2019s most-viewed category, eclipsing \u201clet\u2019s play\u201d tutorials of \u201cLeague of Legends\u201d and \u201cGrand Theft Auto V,\u201d according to Insider.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s pretty universal that people like seeing pretty ladies in bikinis,\u201d\u00a0said Spoopy Kitt<\/a>, an anonymous streamer who has 60,000 followers on the Amazon-owned platform. Spoopy, who regularly talks to viewers while riding on an inflatable lobster, added that \u201chot tubs have become the new and effective way streamers are using to \u2018win the game.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, many Twitch users are none too thrilled with the titillating pastime, which they feel cheapens the platform\u2019s brand.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwitch needs to accept the fact that they are nothing more than a glorified softcore website, pornhub 2.0,\u201d fumed one disillusioned user on the \u201cLivestreamfails\u201d Reddit page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Another compared the trend to explicit webcam site chaturbate minus the naked girl. <\/p>\n

Some critics accused \u201chot tub meta\u201d practitioners of enforcing misogyny on the platform, in which 65% of users are male, according to a 2019 report by consumer data tracker Statista<\/a>. Bikini streamers were quick to defend the practice. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you so angry? It works for a reason. It\u2019s free for you,\u201d Rachell \u201cValkyrae\u201d Hofstetter, the internet\u2019s most-watched female streamer, said in a recent video.<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cI don\u2019t get what the issue is. If no one is hurting anyone, then what\u2019s the issue?\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, despite the complaints, \u201chot tub meta\u201d is likely here to stay as Twitch increasingly strives to broaden its appeal with new categories ranging from walking outside to painting.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, these PG-rated webcam artists have to be careful about what they post. Per their community guidelines<\/a>, Twitch allows swimwear provided that it \u201ccompletely covers the genitals\u201d and that women \u201ccover their nipples.\u201d Meanwhile, clips focusing on breasts, buttocks or the pelvic region can result in a ban. <\/p>\n
