Everyone loves the hedgehog \u2013 except for New Zealand.<\/p>\n

The creature that inspired Beatrix Potter\u2019s \u201cMrs. Tiggy-Winkle\u201d and the popular video game<\/a> character Sonic was introduced to the country decades ago when New Zealand was still a British colony to remind the colonizers of their gardens at home. But with no natural predators on the island nation, the hedgehog population soared and is now a scourge of \u201ckilling machines.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUnchecked by the food chain, they meander blissfully through forests and gardens, hoovering up an astonishing number of native creatures,\u201d the Guardian<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s increasingly coming to light how much damage they can do,\u201d Nick Foster, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Otago who is researching hedgehogs, told the paper. A single, dedicated hedgehog will consume numerous native lizards, bird eggs, and w\u0113t\u0101 \u2013 a kind of large flightless cricket found only in New Zealand. One study found 283 w\u0113t\u0101 legs in a single hedgehog stomach. \u201cThat means in a 24-hour period this hedgehog has guzzled up 60 or so animals,\u201d Foster said. \u201cIt\u2019s a banquet.\u201d<\/p>\n

New Zealand is now trying to eradicate the animals by 2050, by way of trapp<\/a>ing, hunting, and poisoning them \u2014 a plan that is despised by some locals due to the \u201ccuteness\u201d of the animals.<\/p>\n

Foster told the Guardian there is \u201ca bit of a psychological barrier\u201d when it comes to hedgehog eradication. \u201cIt has been proposed to ship them all back to the UK. European hedgehogs aren\u2019t doing so well in Europe. Still in good numbers, but they are declining.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
