src=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/entourage-season-5-poster.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div> <em>Entourage<\/em> creator Doug Ellin accused HBO Max of burying the 2000s-era HBO comedy. But can the streaming platform be blamed?<\/p>\n<p>After all, the powers that be at HBO Max must be aware of what <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/arts\/culturebox\/2015\/05\/entourage_movie_2015_how_the_show_went_from_critical_darling_to_cultural.html\"><em>Slate<\/em>\u2019s Eric Thurm<\/a> called \u201cthe \u201cvast, unceasing stream of critical urine that has continued to soak the dirt of <em>Entourage<\/em>\u2019s grave\u201d in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/entourage-doug-ellin-culture-wars-controversy-metoo-hbo-reboot-170050416.html\">Yahoo! Entertainment<\/a><\/em>, Ellin claimed <em>Entourage<\/em> was \u201chiding in [a category alongside] architectural wish-fulfillment shows\u201d on HBO Max, and he blamed \u201cthis wave of righteous PC culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 53-year-old, who also wrote and directed the 2015 film adaptation, continued: \u201cWe were nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe almost every single year, so to not put us in front and [instead] to put other shows in the \u2018must-see comedy\u2019 list, I thought, was pretty bizarre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u2018It\u2019s Hollywood, Baby\u2019 Trailer | Entourage | HBO Classics\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K511zyLRWCU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ellin also cited the warm critical reception <em>Entourage<\/em> had initially enjoyed, like how <em>The New York Times<\/em>\u2019 Alessandra Stanley called it <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/07\/16\/movies\/tv-weekend-young-star-and-his-orbit.html\">smarter, more original, and more amusing<\/a> than anything on network television.<\/p>\n<p>As <em>Entourage<\/em> continued its eight-season run, however, the critical consensus started to turn. The comedy\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/tv\/entourage\">Rotten Tomatoes score<\/a> dropped from 76 to 60, then to 57, and finally to 46 for the final season around the same time that Jane Lynch quipped that <em>Entourage<\/em> is why she\u2019s a lesbian at the 2011 Emmys.<\/p>\n<p>And <em>Entourage<\/em> has taken a beating in the years since, too, especially when the film came around. After watching the big-screen continuation, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/entertainment\/movies\/news\/a41622\/entourage-couple-of-critics\/\"><em>Cosmopolitan<\/em>\u2019s Tess Koman<\/a> observed that \u201cthere literally wasn\u2019t any woman in the movie who didn\u2019t serve a purpose other than to be hot and f\u2014k bros.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many TV shows wear out their welcome, but the backlash toward <em>Entourage<\/em> is particularly intense, especially because the show has stoked accusations of sexism, misogyny, and racism. \u201c<em>Entourage<\/em> has curdled in critical opinion like Avi\u00f3n tequila getting sour in the sun,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/act-four\/wp\/2015\/06\/05\/why-i-love-entourage-the-show-im-supposed-to-hate\/\"><em>The Washington Post<\/em>\u2019s Alyssa Rosenberg<\/a> wrote in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Entourage - Official Main Trailer [HD]\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SGSE_XPF4_g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In his interview, Ellin said he resented the HBO Max slight \u201cbecause I don\u2019t think <em>Entourage<\/em> was this vulgar boy-fest that people like to paint it as now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a brief timeline of the backlash, including actors\u2019 damning statements about the show\u2019s work environment.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CInsensitive_gay_jokes%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>\u201cInsensitive gay jokes\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In 2009, Rex Lee\u2014the actor behind assistant Lloyd\u2014told <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2009\/11\/20\/entourage-rex-lee-gay-racial-doug-ellen-video\/\">TMZ<\/a><\/em> he was occasionally the subject of racist and homophobic jokes on set. Ellin told the site that he spoke to Lee and found out that the crew members had made \u201cinsensitive gay jokes\u201d at Lee\u2019s expense.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CConceived_by_a_gaggle_of_misogynistic_beer-chugging_adolescent_virgins%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>\u201cConceived by a gaggle of misogynistic, beer-chugging adolescent virgins\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/entourage-or-why-simone-de-beauvoir-is-spinning-in-her-grave_b_7529944\"><em>HuffPost<\/em> contributor Brandon Judell<\/a> said the 2015 movie \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to have been conceived by a gaggle of misogynistic, beer-chugging adolescent virgins who brag about getting laid, but the closest they\u2019ve ever gotten is a <em>Playboy<\/em> centerfold.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CA_reliable_font_of_crass_humor_and_casual_misogyny_and_homophobia%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>\u201cA reliable font of crass humor and casual misogyny and homophobia\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In a 2015 review of the movie, <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2015\/06\/entourage-movie-quotes\/\">WIRED<\/a><\/em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2015\/06\/entourage-movie-quotes\/\">\u2019s<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2015\/06\/entourage-movie-quotes\/\">Kevin McFarland<\/a> wrote, \u201cA <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> known for its glorification of the Hollywood meat market, devoid of any critical satire or anything above the laziest humor, <em>Entourage<\/em> has long been a reliable font of crass humor and casual misogyny and homophobia.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CYou_finally_hear_the_racism_the_homophobia_and_the_sustained_misogyny_buried_in_the_foundation_of_the_series_premise%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>\u201cYou finally hear the racism, the homophobia, and the sustained misogyny buried in the foundation of the series\u2019 premise\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2015\/06\/falling-out-of-love-with-entourage-130893\/\"><em>IndieWire<\/em>\u2019s Vikram Murthi<\/a> recounted \u201cfalling out of love with <em>Entourage<\/em>\u201d in a 2015 column. \u201cWhat doesn\u2019t make sense is how long I continued to watch <em>Entourage<\/em> after I caught on to its shtick,\u201d Murthi wrote. \u201cIt only took a couple more years to realize all the flaws that were staring at you in the face.
