{"id":246052,"date":"2021-05-10T04:20:01","date_gmt":"2021-05-10T01:20:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/suffolk-county-pol-wants-to-overhaul-nys-judge-selection-process\/"},"modified":"2021-05-10T04:20:01","modified_gmt":"2021-05-10T01:20:01","slug":"suffolk-county-pol-wants-to-overhaul-nys-judge-selection-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/suffolk-county-pol-wants-to-overhaul-nys-judge-selection-process\/","title":{"rendered":"#Suffolk County pol wants to overhaul NY&#8217;s judge selection process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Suffolk County pol wants to overhaul NY&#8217;s judge selection process<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Democratic Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone is calling on the state\u2019s top judge, Janet DiFiore, to support an overhaul of how New York\u2019s judges are selected and end the political influence typically dominating the process. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn independent review\u2026would provide an unprecedented examination of an outdated process that enables political insiders to wield undue influence over the selection of candidates to serve on our Judiciary,\u201d Bellone wrote to DiFiore \u2014 Chief Judge of the Court of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>eals and of the State of New York \u2014 in a letter on April 26.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of a merit-based system designed to promote excellence, diversity, and independence, we have a process that benefits the politically connected at the expense of ordinary New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he\u2019s planning a judicial reform conference scheduled to take place on June 8, and will be joined by watchdog groups such as the Brennan Center for Justice, Fund for Modern Courts, League of Women Voters and other elected officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have often said that we cannot have a serious conversation about criminal justice reform without addressing the manner in which judges are selected in this State. Time and again the outcome in judicial elections is predetermined, leaving voters with one candidate from which to choose instead of a list of the most qualified candidates to serve,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Reform advocates have criticized the process largely as unfair, arguing it permits political parties to handpick trial court judges, instead of allowing the independent election of judges based on merit.<\/p>\n<p>New York is one of just a handful of states where candidates seeking state Supreme court judgeships are nominated and then chosen by delegates at judicial conventions, eliminating competitive primary elections.<\/p>\n<p>The process essentially allows judicial candidates to be pre-selected, and their names automatically are listed on the ballot before voters go to the polls.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"728\" alt=\"Steve Bellone called for the changes in an open letter to Janet DiFiore, Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals and of the State of New York.\" class=\"wp-image-18197287 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/New-York-Legislature-Convenes.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/New-York-Legislature-Convenes.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/New-York-Legislature-Convenes.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/New-York-Legislature-Convenes.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/New-York-Legislature-Convenes.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2048 2048w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Steve Bellone called for the changes in an open letter to Janet DiFiore, Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals and of the State of New York.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP Photo\/Hans Pennink<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Not all judges are selected and elected in this manner, appellate court judges are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state senate.<\/p>\n<p>In New York City, elections are held for the Surrogate\u2019s and Civil courts but the mayor picks judges to serve on the Family and Criminal courts as well has having the power to fill Civil vacancies. <\/p>\n<p>Fixes to the system would require a change in state election law.<\/p>\n<p>DiFiore wrote to Bellone last fall that while the judicial branch technically has \u201cno control\u201d over how judges are picked, as that\u2019s up to \u201cthe rules and practices of political parties,\u201d she supports \u201ca broad examination of existing judicial selection practices would be of great value to our state and could only help strengthen public trust and confidence in the impartiality and independence of the judiciary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for the state court system reiterated DiFiore\u2019s position, adding Sunday, \u201cany suggestions or recommendations by the County Executive would certainly be seriously considered and open to further discussion.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
