\n Three fraternities at Stony Brook University have been suspended pending an investigation into sexual assault and hazing allegations against some of their members.<\/p>\n

The university announced in a July 1 notice that Kapp<\/a>a Sigma, Sigma Beta Rho and Tau Kappa Epsilon were placed on interim suspension following accusations that were lodged a week earlier.<\/p>\n

Eight Stony Brook students accused five current frat members and three alumni of sexual assault, detailing their allegations on Instagram and Twitter<\/a>, according to The Statesman, the campus news<\/a>paper that first reported the suspensions.<\/p>\n

The university, in its announcement, said that it is school policy to suspend Greek organizations that are being actively investigated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is consistent with our process, as sexual assault and hazing have no place on college campuses or in our society,\u201d the notice read.<\/p>\n

The week the accusations were reported, an Instagram account called \u201cvoicesofsb\u201d was created as an anonymous platform for Stony Brook students to share their experiences with sexual assault.<\/p>\n

As of late Thursday, nearly 20 students had told their stories.<\/p>\n

At least one woman whose story appeared on the account accused a fraternity member of sexual assault, though it\u2019s unclear if he\u2019s a member of one of the three frats being probed.<\/p>\n

The creator of the Instagram account told The Statesman that the profile was launched as a way to raise awareness in a safe environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy friend found comfort in sharing her story with me,\u201d the account owner told the paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to help more people feel that same comfort by giving them a safe platform where they could share their story without the fear of being known.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
