Don\u2019t take that the wrong way; there\u2019s a lot of evidence. But proof is for math, and death is only certain in retrospect.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why any research that pushes the boundaries of what we can observe, test, and replicate when it comes to the wacky world of quantum mechanics is exciting. <i>Spooky action at a distance<\/i><span> could be our ticket to immortality. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An international team of researchers recently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/372\/6542\/570\">published work<\/a> demonstrating quantum entanglement at an unprecedented macro-scale. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Per <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/quantum-entanglement-has-now-been-directly-observed-at-a-larger-macroscopic-scale\">a report from<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> Alert\u2019s David Nield:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The dimensions involved are still very small from our perspective \u2013 these experiments involved two tiny aluminum drums one-fifth the width of a human hair \u2013 but in the realm of quantum physics they\u2019re absolutely huge.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Entanglement is a property of quantum mechanics wherein one particle can be made to respond to the stimulation of another particle, where they\u2019re separated by distance.<\/p>\n<p>In other words: if you entangle two particles and tickle one of them, they both laugh.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read:\u00a0Here\u2019s what quantum computing is and why it matters]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s interesting here is that the researchers managed to entangle tiny aluminum drums. They observed the entanglement across the drums by measuring vibrations.<\/p>\n<p>In essence, a drummer on one stage played their drum and the sound simultaneously teleported to a drum on the other side of the stage. If we continue to increase the scale at which we can perform observable feats of quantum mechanics, we\u2019ll eventually slip the classical realm entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Once we reach the point where, for example, we can entangle entire planets, it\u2019ll hardly be worth distinguishing between classical and quantum physics.<\/p>\n<p>But before we achieve planet-scale teleportation <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, it\u2019s likely we\u2019ll find other interesting uses for entanglement. The core idea here is that, theoretically, <i>information<\/i><span> can be sent between any number of entangled objects across any distance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This begs the question: can two neural networks become entangled? If we look at the aluminum drums in the aforementioned research, it seems possible. Think about two entangled drum kits with lots of different drums and cymbals, all being played by the same drummer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If those drum kits are just tiny neural networks meant to output jams, then we can imagine them scaled all the way up to billions and billions of drums. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The human brain is thought to be an organic neural network. Scientists believe it functions much like the kind of neural networks AI developers use to imitate art or create DeepFakes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Our brains are much more complex, of course. But it stands to reason, if we can imagine entangling a planet or a neural network: why couldn\u2019t we entangle our brains with each other\u2019s or with an artificial neural network? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What if you could just \u201cshare\u201d your consciousness across multiple networks? Ultimately, if one of those networks failed, or the computer it ran on stopped functioning, couldn\u2019t you just replace that machine and keep trucking?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Or what if we could use quantum entanglement to mesh our minds with someone else\u2019s brains, like a Vuclan mind meld? Perhaps we could even grow blank brains to replicate our consciousness in through entanglement in case our first\u00a0brain malfunctions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This speculation is, unfortunately, not grounded in reality. The fact of the matter is that we haven\u2019t quite unified classical and quantum physics. Scientists believe a feature of quantum mechanics called <em>decoherence<\/em> would present a massive roadblock towards maintaining a consciousness in the quantum realm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This was noted by Shuld et al., back in 2014 in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1408.7005.pdf\">a pre-print paper<\/a> discussing quantum neural networks (QNNs):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>Although close to discussions about the potential \u2018quantumness of the brain\u2019, QNNs do not intend to explain our brain functions in terms of quantum mechanics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Neurons are macroscopic objects with dynamics on the timescale of microseconds, and a quron\u2019s theoretically introduced two quantum states refer to a process involving millions of ions in a confined space, leading to estimated decoherence times in the order of 10\u221213 sec and less, thus making quantum effects unlikely to play a role in neural information processing. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>This isn\u2019t to say it isn\u2019t possible, but it\u2019ll take more than just scaling quantum experiments to figure out how to get our minds into spare brains or onto chips. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
