And that&#8217;s up from 76 per cent in February.\n                        <\/div>\n<div>\n                                                                        <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccine deliveries are ramping up and the share of eligible Canadians with at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine in their arms has reached <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/trevortombe\/status\/1391537806766313473?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 46 per cent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Now, the focus is turning to speculation about the arrival of that prosaic two-word moment signifying everything has truly changed: herd immunity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herd immunity is the \u201cstate where a significant proportion of the population is immune to an infection leaving few susceptible people who can be infected and transmit the infection,\u201d explains <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.publichealthontario.ca\/-\/media\/documents\/ncov\/covid-wwksf\/2021\/02\/wwksf-herd-immunity.pdf?la=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public Health Ontario<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In essence, if a critical mass of the herd is immunized, then infection doesn\u2019t have much opportunity to spread to those with weaker immune systems or those <\/span>who are unvaccinated<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most viruses,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cherd immunity can be anywhere from 50 to 90 per cent,\u201d Dr. Supriya Sharma, Canada\u2019s chief medical adviser, explained on March 5<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at a press conference announcing the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roval of the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine. But, for the time being,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experts say there isn\u2019t one \u201cmagic number\u201d for herd immunity against COVID-19. While 70 per cent would usually be needed for this type of virus, Sharma says that because highly infectious variants of concern are circulating in Canada, the share of the population with immunity may need to be higher, possibly up to 85 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0Confused by NACI\u2019s AstraZeneca recommendation? Why the first shot offered is still the best shot<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reaching herd immunity is effectively a matter of math: the amount of vaccine arriving in Canada plus<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the number of people getting shots. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frank Graves, founder of Ekos Research, thinks Canada will get there. He<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been polling on all things pandemic since early last year and sharing his results on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VoiceOfFranky\/status\/1388705434786222086?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">latest poll from April 19-25<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that 85 per cent of Canadians either have received a shot of COVID-19 vaccine or want to get a shot. And that has climbed steadily from 76 per cent in February. In contrast, the percentage of those who say they won\u2019t get vaccinated has been going the other way, down from 24 per cent in February to 15 per cent now. And Graves\u2019s data syncs with data from Innovative Research, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/innovativeresearch.ca\/canadians-grow-more-willing-to-be-vaccinated\/?utm_campaign=CTM2021&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_content=CTM2021_W5_VACCINE%20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which have 84 per cent of Canadians in the<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201clikely or already vaccinated\u201d group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI measure vaccine acceptance in a pretty blunt way: \u2018Would you take a vaccine if it was available?\u2019 \u201d the sociologist explains. \u201cPeople who told me they are going to get vaccinated are the same people who did get vaccinated in my<\/span> [longitudinal] <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey,\u201d he says. That\u2019s around 42 per cent, which lined up with the real-world share of eligible Canadians who had been vaccinated by the time of his last survey. Of the remaining 60 per cent of those surveyed who haven\u2019t been vaccinated, a little over 70 per cent of them say they will get vaccinated. That cohort (70 per cent of 60 per cent, which is roughly 42 per cent of the total population) combined with the share already vaccinated is enough to get Canada over the 80 per cent mark and likely beyond the 85 per cent mark.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0What new COVID vaccine modelling says about when Canada might lift restrictions<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graves thinks Canada\u2019s adoption of Britain\u2019s decision to quickly broaden vaccine coverage through a \u201cfirst dose first\u201d strategy is crucial to getting enough people vaccinated so that life can return to normal. His research shows that 95 per cent of those who have already had first doses either have gotten or will get second doses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early evidence from countries like Britain, Israel and the United States shows that if you vaccinate enough people, the number of new infections will decrease. But it\u2019s also a question of how far those rates can be driven down. In Britain, which has an extremely high acceptance of vaccinations, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cases have plummeted from more than 60,000 a day to around 1,500<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while the daily death count has dropped from nearly 1,300 a day to just one on May 3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, the United States is now facing a situation where the number of vaccinations is dropping rapidly, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/us\/covid-19-vaccine-doses.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">down from an average of 3.4 million doses a day a month ago<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to two million a day now. As of May 9, the Centers for Disease Control reports that 45.8 per cent of the population have received at least one dose, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#vaccinations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including 34.4 per cent who have been fully vaccinated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2020\/health\/covid-vaccine-states-distribution-doses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wide regional variations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; states in the Northeast or on the West Coast have the highest proportion of first doses received, led by Vermont at 61.3 per cent, while states in the South and West are much lower, the lowest being<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mississippi (32 per cent), Louisiana (33.4 per cent) and Alabama (33.7 per cent). So, while the overall situation is improving dramatically, experts worry that the disease will become endemic to certain regions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Canada, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid19tracker.ca\/vaccinationtracker.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">39 per cent of the overall population<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have received first doses, and the country is on track to give out first doses to 75 per cent of its adult population by June 9, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/trevortombe\/status\/1391537885996740609?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to data crunched <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by University of Calgary economics professor Trevor Tombe. In contrast, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/trevortombe\/status\/1391538046357557250?s=20\">Tombe estimates the United States won\u2019t reach that same 75 per cent mark<\/a> until<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 84 days after Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0COVID-19 in Canada: How our battle to stop the pandemic is going<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, there are still problems here. As Graves explains, \u201ch<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erd immunity is a product of communities. And communities aggregate up to form countries.\u201d While some provinces are eagerly lining up for shots<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he singles out Quebec, noting that \u201cThey were the worst out of the blocks [of the pandemic], but they are going to finish with a flourish\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the same can\u2019t be said for Alberta, which he describes as a \u201chot mess.\u201d Alberta has the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/health-infobase.canada.ca\/covid-19\/vaccination-coverage\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/health-infobase.canada.ca\/covid-19\/vaccination-coverage\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1620771231273000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG6CehgEGnlaanM51SC3NkEA65BlQ\">lowest first-dose vaccination rate among the provinces\u00a0in Central and Western Canada<\/a>. And <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VoiceOfFranky\/status\/1388705434962382850?s=20\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/twitter.com\/VoiceOfFranky\/status\/1388705434962382850?s%3D20&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1620771231273000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEBoMGEP8BcGzV8ZaGQUy_GLPNftQ\">19 per cent of Albertans<\/a> surveyed told Graves that they would not get vaccinated compared to 14 per cent in next place British Columbia and just 12 per cent for all of Canada.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, Graves is hopeful that Canada will find its way out of the pandemic. \u201cEverything is changing really rapidly,\u201d he says. \u201cWhat I would have found a month ago or even a week ago doesn\u2019t look like what I see today.\u201d He attributes some of those changes to the severity of the third wave of the pandemic, which seems to be helping bolster the case for vaccines. \u201cWhen [people]<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see risk rising, they will respond, most of them rationally,\u201d says Graves.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that means they want vaccines: \u201cThey really want to see this thing end and are scared about what\u2019s going on in the community\u2026 We want normal,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While a lot of those polled by EKOS<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t think the country will achieve herd immunity for a while\u2014four per cent say we\u2019ll hit that marker by July; 17 per cent think it will be in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">September; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32 per cent say<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">December and another 35 per cent believe it won\u2019t occur until 2022\u2014Graves is far more optimistic that things will improve significantly by summer. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be just brilliant compared to [this past] winter and the previous summer.\u201d It won\u2019t be a complete respite from the pandemic, as more and more of the population get first and second doses, but \u201cit\u2019s going to be manageable.
