“#The Smart Money’s on Jean Smart in ‘Hacks’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Jean Smart<\/a> is the very opposite of a hack.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s nailing it dramatically as Kate Winslet<\/a>\u2019s sardonic blue-collar mother on HBO\u2019s Mare of Easttown<\/em><\/a>, and as a Las Vegas entertainer who\u2019s known better days on the HBO Max dramedy Hacks<\/em><\/a>, she kills again in all the best ways.<\/p>\n

As Deborah Vance, who\u2019s hanging on to her casino-theater residency by a thread, with occasional detours to QVC to hawk merchandise, Smart finds dignity in indignity, swanning around her lonely mansion with its library of 30,000 jokes. (Think Phyllis Diller by way of Sunset Boulevard<\/em>\u2019s Gloria Swanson.) She\u2019s serious about comedy, which is why it stings when she\u2019s saddled by a callow agent with Ava (Hannah Einbinder), an ostracized and pretentious millennial comedy writer who thinks her new gig of punching up Deborah\u2019s material is beneath her.<\/p>\n

As if. The imbalance in Hacks\u2019<\/em> odd-couple premise is that while every quip out of Deborah\u2019s mouth is a hoot (\u201cI was just wondering why you were dressed like Rachel Maddow\u2019s mechanic\u201d), nothing about the smug and whiny Ava suggests she\u2019s comedically worthy of laundering her boss\u2019s caftans. There\u2019s only one hack here.<\/p>\n

Smart\u2019s best moment as the proverbial tough cookie comes early, when Deborah schools her not-quite-protegee on the tough knocks of show business. (We later learn that Deborah came within reach of becoming TV\u2019s first female late-night host until personal scandal derailed her career.)<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t know what hard is,\u201d Deborah barks to this inexperienced avatar of unearned superiority. \u201cGood is the minimum. It\u2019s the baseline. You have to be so much more than good. And even if you\u2019re great\u2014and<\/em> lucky!\u2014you still have to work really f***ing hard. And even that is not enough. You have to scratch and claw, and it never f***ing ends. And it doesn\u2019t get better. It just gets harder.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jean Smart is so much more than good that it almost isn\u2019t funny. Except she really is, whether she\u2019s cajoling the smarmy casino owner (Christopher McDonald) to not replace her with Pentatonix or riffing on stage with off-color jokes that are old enough to vote.<\/p>\n

Race you to that front-row seat.<\/p>\n
