After an illustrious career in beloved films and shows such as \u201cDead Poets Society\u201d and \u201cSt. Elsewhere,\u201d Norman Lloyd has died. He was 106.<\/p>\n

A family friend confirmed his passing to Deadline<\/a>. He reportedly died in his sleep at his Los Angeles home.<\/p>\n

Born in New Jersey, Lloyd got his start acting in New York in the 1930s, the Wrap reported<\/a>. One of his first big roles was Cinna the Poet in an acclaimed 1937 adaptation of Shakespeare\u2019s \u201cJulius Caesar\u201d when he was a charter member of Orson Welles and John Houseman\u2019s Mercury Theatre. Lloyd was originally cast in Welles\u2019 infamous \u201cCitizen Kane,\u201d Deadline reported, but quit the project due to budget problems.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when he got his big break on the big screen, with none other than Alfred Hitchcock in 1942\u2019s \u201cSaboteur\u201d and 1945\u2019s \u201cSpellbound.\u201d Lloyd later worked with the acclaimed director again as associate producer on the series<\/a> \u201cAlfred Hitchcock Presents.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe network told Hitch, there\u2019s a problem with Lloyd, and he simply said, \u2018I want him.\u2019 They all could have done that,\u201d Lloyd told The Post in 2007. \u201cBut they were cowards. It was Hitch who freed me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 1980s proved to be his claim to fame for many fans, who remember him as a series regular on NBC\u2019s Emmy-winning \u201cSt. Elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat series was like doing a very good Broadway show where you don\u2019t have to do the same thing every night,\u201d he told The Post of his role as Dr. Auschlander.<\/p>\n

Lloyd also starred as the headmaster in 1989\u2019s \u201cDead Poets Society\u201d and Martin Scorsese\u2019s \u201cThe Age of Innocence\u201d (1993).<\/p>\n

Most recently, Lloyd was 100 years old when he starred in the 2015 film \u201cTrainwreck\u201d alongside Amy Schumer. \u201cI expressed lechery,\u201d he told the Telegraph<\/a>. \u201cAnd my daughter, who\u2019s 76, walked out of the picture. She wrote me a letter \u2013 \u2018It\u2019s not the kind of picture I thought I\u2019d see you in, Dad!\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n
