Voyager 1<\/a>, which is the farthest human-made object from Earth and the first to enter interstellar space, has been detecting a \u201cfaint, persistent hum\u201d that scientists have attributed to\u00a0interstellar gas.<\/a><\/p>\n

Phys.org<\/a>, citing research published in\u00a0Nature Astronomy,<\/a>\u00a0reported that the spacecraft\u2019s Plasma Wave System has picked up a \u201cpersistent signature produced by the tenuous near-vacuum of space.\u201d<\/p>\n

James Cordes, a professor of astronomy at Cornell University, reportedly described the sound as a \u201cquiet or gentle rain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the case of a solar outburst, it\u2019s like detecting a lightning burst in a thunderstorm and then it\u2019s back to a gentle rain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Stella Koch Ocker, a doctoral student at the university, who lead the research, said, \u201cWe\u2019re detecting the faint, persistent hum of interstellar gas. It\u2019s very faint and monotone, because it is in a narrow frequency bandwidth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Voyager 1\u2032s odyssey began in 1977 when the spacecraft and its twin, Voyager 2, were launched on a tour of the gas giant planets of the solar system.<\/p>\n

After beaming back dazzling postcard views of Jupiter\u2019s giant red spot and Saturn\u2019s shimmering rings, Voyager 2 hopscotched to Uranus and Neptune. Meanwhile, Voyager 1 used Saturn as a gravitational slingshot to power itself past Pluto.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is now about 15 billion miles from Earth.<\/p>\n

Voyager 1 is about the size of a subcompact car and carries instruments that study magnetic fields, cosmic rays and solar wind.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
