of the few major topics that enjoys bipartisan support in Congress \u2014 though skeptics rightly point out that while Democrats and Republicans agree that the U.S. economy suffers from a competition problem, they don\u2019t agree on what steps should be taken to solve it. <\/p>\n<p> But this divide is not nearly as prevalent at the state level, where attorneys <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> have banded together on bipartisan lawsuits against big tech firms like <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> Inc.<br \/>\n        FB,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205064656\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.18%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Alphabet Inc.\u2019s<br \/>\n        GOOG,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205453964\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.40%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       Google, and where even Republican law enforcers have shown willingness to work with Biden-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed officials at agencies like the Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to go after companies that are violating laws aimed at promoting competition. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       This bipartisanship was on display at the National Association of Attorney General Consumer Protection conference Tuesday, where the heads of these agencies were invited to speak about their efforts at consumer protection and how they can collaborate with top state law enforcers to further those goals. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more<\/strong>: <a bill that could upend tech sector<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The conversation quickly turned to pro-competition policy, with Acting Director of the Consumer Financial Bureau Dave Uejio telling the audience that \u201ccompetition policy has never been more important than it is today,\u201d because \u201ccompetition is the best way to ensure that consumers have power in their transactions with companies.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Acting chairwoman of the Federal Trade Commission Rebecca Kelly Slaughter framed the FTC\u2019s lawsuit against Facebook, which was joined by 48 attorneys general from 46 states, the District of Columbia and Guam, as an effort that would bolster consumer protections. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn digital markets \u2026 we\u2019re seeing huge consumer protection issues\u201d related to privacy, the use of consumer data and harassment, Slaughter said. \u201cThat\u2019s coming from platforms that have enormous market power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Google is also the subject of a joint lawsuit brought last fall by the Justice Department\u2019s antitrust division in partnership with 13 state attorneys general, while an even broader suit was brought by a bipartisan coalition of 38 state attorneys general.  The Justice Department and the FTC are also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/amazon-antitrust-probe-ftc-new-york-california-online-marketplace-2020-8\" class=\"icon none\">reportedly investigating<\/a> Amazon.com Inc.<br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.05%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/06\/24\/justice-department-anti-trust-apple-337120\" class=\"icon none\">and Apple Inc<\/a>.<br \/>\n        AAPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202934861\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.74%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       for violations of federal competition laws.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From February<\/strong>: Attorney general nominee Garland says he will \u2018vigorously\u2019 enforce antitrust law<\/p>\n<p>Though there is greater agreement among Democrats and Republicans that big tech firms specifically are in need of greater antitrust scrutiny, the proliferation of high-tech components in products from appliances to farming equipment has made this distinction less helpful, according to Slaughter. <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>She pointed to a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/reports\/nixing-fix-ftc-report-congress-repair-restrictions\/nixing_the_fix_report_final_5521_630pm-508_002.pdf\" class=\"icon none\">congressionally mandated report<\/a> the FTC submitted last week examining the issue of manufacturer restrictions on who is allowed to repair products that highlighted the way companies extract more revenue from consumers by creating products that cannot be repaired by third parties. <\/p>\n<p>Advocates for the \u201cright to repair\u201d have called out Apple\u2019s iPhone as an example of a product designed to become obsolete in short order, as well as John Deere\u2019s<br \/>\n        DE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207941296\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.10%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       farming equipment. \u201cThe phone or tractor you buy quickly becomes a lump of junk,\u201d because of such tactics, Slaughter said.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut also appeared at the conference, offering his support to state AGs and federal enforcers and urging them to show \u201cbackbone and grit,\u201d when it comes to enforcement of antitrust laws. Blumenthal is a co-sponsor of recent proposed legislation that would boost resources for federal antitrust enforcers and give them wider power to block mergers and break up companies engaging in anticompetitive practices.
