Forty-four state attorneys general<\/a> wrote Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg asking him to drop plans for an \u201cInstagram Kids\u201d for under-13s, but the social-media giant has no shame, insisting children and parents will be better off.<\/p>\n

Better off for Facebook \u2014 which will addict kids earlier.<\/p>\n

Parents already fret over perverted adults trolling \u201ckid spaces\u201d like Roblox. And regular Instagram is plagued by child predators seeking to identify and groom potential victims. Now moms and dads will have another worry.<\/p>\n

This follows Facebook\u2019s earlier ignoring of a global coalition of 35 child-advocacy groups and 64 experts who warned of a \u201cgreat risk\u201d to young children, and not just from perverts: They also flagged how \u201cthe platform\u2019s relentless focus on app<\/a>earance, self-presentation and branding\u201d presents \u201cchallenges to adolescents\u2019 privacy and well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n

Plus, a pack of US senators rightly noted, \u201cFacebook has a record of failing to protect children\u2019s privacy and safety, casting serious doubt on its ability to do so on a version of Instagram that is marketed to children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since Instagram\u2019s launch in 2010, the photo-sharing app has blocked children 12 and under from creating an account. Some kids lie about their ages to gain access, but the rule is there for good reason: Research (and a simple scroll through posts from any child with a substantial follower count) reveals countless sexually explicit comments from older men directed at minors.<\/p>\n

No new controls can protect an even younger audience from that nightmare.<\/p>\n

Facebook promises the new app will \u201cgive kids a more contained environment that makes it simpler and more fun for them to explore on their own, and easier for parents and caregivers to guide their journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

But parents are already at wits\u2019 end policing their kids\u2019 Internet use. And, as the AGs note, \u201cthis platform appeals primarily to children who otherwise do not or would not have an Instagram account.\u201d The kids who already lie to access Instagram won\u2019t switch: This is just going to bring in other<\/em> children \u2014 which is the real aim. <\/p>\n

As John Mac Ghlionn\u00a0wrote in The Post last month, \u201cFacebook is in the business of creating customers for life. It\u2019s like factory farming, but your children are the animals.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

And Facebook won\u2019t stop unless Congress forces the issue.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
