“#Ally Brooke Faced ‘Mental And Verbal Abuse’ During ‘Traumatizing’ Time In Fifth Harmony

\nAs hard as it is for her to admit, Ally Brooke<\/strong> f**king hated being in Fifth Harmony<\/strong>. And after hearing her dish about the \u201ctoxicity\u201d that plagued her environment while being involved in one of the world\u2019s largest girl groups, it\u2019s not hard to understand why.<\/p>\n

The singer opened up about her complicated past in the band during her brand new podcast The Ally Brooke Show<\/em> on Wednesday. She even revealed that she dealt with \u201cmental and verbal abuse\u201d as a member of Fifth Harmony. Ally expressed:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a whirlwind. I\u2019m going to say how proud I am of Fifth Harmony, of what we did, of what we did for music, what we did for female empowerment, what we did for girl groups. We will be in the history books, y\u2019all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But thinking back on her time with Normani<\/strong>, Camila<\/strong> Cabello<\/strong>, Lauren<\/strong> Jauregui<\/strong>, and Dinah<\/strong> Jane<\/strong>, all the original members of the X-Factor<\/em> band, Brooke continued:<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I hate saying this: My time in Fifth Harmony, I didn\u2019t enjoy it. I didn\u2019t love it. It was hard because there was so much going on. So much behind the scenes, so much toxicity, so much abuse, so much abuse of power, so much mental abuse, verbal abuse, and it\u2019s just horrible and to me, it\u2019s a shame because we were so big. I should have enjoyed myself more.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

One particularly shocking reveal came when Ally said a label head tried to \u201ctake advantage\u201d of her when she came to him for help as the band was \u201cbreaking\u201d up (which occurred in 2018, two years after Shawn Mendes<\/strong>\u2018 lady ditched the musical act for her own projects). The Texas native shared:<\/p>\n

\u201cI show up to meet with him and he gives me a freaking thong. I know what he was trying to do. I was humiliated. I was going there super vulnerable [asking for help]\u2026 At the time, that behavior was accepted.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So not okay! The 27-year-old also admitted that she struggled with the band\u2019s indefinite hiatus because she was always the \u201cglue\u201d of the group, noting:<\/p>\n

\u201cI was that mom. I tried to keep us together as a unit. It was very, very hard. It was a tough experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sadly, most of her time with the Work from Home<\/em> ladies was \u201ctraumatizing,\u201d especially when it came to comparisons and body image:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll look at a music video and all I\u2019ll remember is how I felt that day. How I felt super insecure, or how I felt let down or how I felt like I wasn\u2019t good enough. People around me told me that I wasn\u2019t good enough, I wasn\u2019t cool enough, I wasn\u2019t valued, nobody cared about me. It was awful but I also try to remember the good times.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Being constantly referred to as the \u201cbig one\u201d among the band definitely didn\u2019t help her self-esteem either. Harking back on comments expressed in her new memoir, Ally furthered:<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople said I was the fat one and all these things and especially in one moment when we were shooting a music video we were in bathing suits and I didn\u2019t feel at my best. And then there were paparazzi pictures that came out and people made fun of me so much and it was horrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But even the good times were laced with a \u201cfight for our lives,\u201d as the performers were pitted against each other, forced to be \u201ccompetitive\u201d over every opportunity \u2014 such as who sang what lines in a song. While she admitted later in their career \u201cit did get better,\u201d Brooke was often left \u201ccrushed\u201d and \u201cembarrassed\u201d when she wasn\u2019t selected for good singing parts. Wow\u2026<\/p>\n
