June (Elisabeth Moss<\/a>) reaches Chicago in the May 12 episode of The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> but is caught in a bombing (the work of Gilead\u2019s Commanders). The aftermath, however, sets the stage for a major reunion we\u2019ve been waiting for.<\/p>\n

As June stumbles around after taking a hit during the explosion, she turns and sees none other than her best friend Moira (Samira Wiley<\/a>), who escaped Gilead and made it to freedom in Canada in Season 1. But a lot has happ<\/a>ened to them since they last saw each other.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth of them have been going through a journey of recovery or moving on after sexual trauma after a refugee experience when they joined together, that\u2019s where you get to measure them against each other,\u201d showrunner Bruce Miller tells TV Insider. \u201cThey were so simpatico beforehand and they were able to talk about anything, [including] \u2018I don\u2019t think you should marry this boy.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Will that remain the case? We\u2019ll have to wait and see. \u201cThat relationship is so strong and so vital and so important to both of them and to see how they\u2019re going to manage that going forward gives you a good idea of how [June\u2019s] relationships with everybody, including [her husband] Luke [O-T Fagbenle<\/a>], are going to change,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

Thanks in part to the \u201castonishing\u201d acting from both Moss and Wiley, they\u2019re able to move June and Moira\u2019s relationship \u201cinto some very complicated places,\u201d Miller teased. \u201cIt rewards the fact that you love and believe in their relationship, that you really are rooting for it going forward to sustain. It has some knots.\u201d<\/p>\n

That bombing in Chicago comes as part of a plan from the Commanders to attack just before a cease-fire. At first, the Commanders are against showing any signs of weakness by holding back, but thanks to some dirt that Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd<\/a>), Lawrence (Bradley Whitford<\/a>) is able to convince the others to agree to his plan \u2014 with that bombing as a condition. It\u2019s a move that blindsides Nick (Max Minghella<\/a>), considering he and the other Commander had at least been talking and neither wants June dead.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve seen Nick discombobulated, which is really fun to play\u201d Minghella laughs. \u201cI liked playing him sort of frazzled, and I hope there\u2019ll be more of that. It\u2019s really kind of an interesting dynamic with Lawrence because they really are sort of two sides of the same coin and can probably get to each other in a way that other people can\u2019t because there\u2019s a little bit of a sort of Batman-Joker thing going on with them. Lawrence understands Nick in a way that most people don\u2019t and Nick understands Lawrence in a way that other people don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

That information from Lydia came as part of a deal she struck with Lawrence to get back out with the handmaids instead of essentially being forced into retirement. \u201c<\/strong>That\u2019s where her life has meaning. That\u2019s what she does service to herself and others. She really thinks that she is providing something that no one else can do as well,\u201d Dowd explains. \u201cShe feels hugely protective of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

This comes after she and another Aunt, Ruth, tells her it\u2019s time for her to rest. \u201cThat little smarty pants of a young aunt, I\u2019ll get her, you know,\u201d Dowd insists. \u201cI don\u2019t know if it\u2019s in the writing for next season, but I [will].\u201d<\/p>\n

As far as working with Lawrence to get what they both want, Lydia trusts him \u201cas far as she can throw him,\u201d the star who plays her continues. \u201cThere\u2019s something about that man that\u2019s really hard to figure for Lydia. The way he\u2019s always treated her like she\u2019s an idiot who\u2019s 96, doesn\u2019t know what she\u2019s doing \u2014 it\u2019s so insulting. I\u2019ve always wanted to come up with language that would put him in his place. She takes a big risk here because he is a Commander, but it\u2019s worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n
