“#Chuck Lorre explains that memorable ‘B Positive’ opener<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cB Positive\u201d wraps its freshman season Thursday night at 9:30 on CBS. <\/p>\n

The sitcom, created by Marco Pennette, centers around straight-laced suburban dad Drew (Thomas Middleditch), who needs a kidney transplant, and Gina (Annaleigh Ashford), his hard-partying high school acquaintance who offers to be his donor.<\/p>\n

The series<\/a> struck an immedia<\/a>te chord with its witty opening-title sequence, 25 seconds of \u201cMonty Python\u201d-esque animation (including singing kidneys) backed by a theme<\/a> song written by co-executive producer Chuck Lorre and Grammy-winning artist Keb\u2019 Mo\u2019 (he also sings the tune). The \u201cTheme From B Positive\u201d has warranted a full-length digital release on WaterTower Music (available on all streaming platforms).<\/p>\n

Lorre, responsible for a string of CBS hits including \u201cThe Big Bang Theory,\u201d \u201cMike and Molly,\u201d \u201cYoung Sheldon,\u201d \u201cMom,\u201d \u201cBob Hearts Abishola\u201d (and \u201cThe Kominsky Method\u201d on Netflix) answered some questions about catchy \u201cB Positive\u201d opening sequence.<\/p>\n

You seemed to have put a lot of stock into making an immediate first impression with the opening credits.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u201cB Positive\u201d theme song and the animation in the opening credits was the
result of my weird hunch that we could set a comic tone to an otherwise grim
topic. I\u2019ve never had any set rules for when or how to go about creating an opening
title sequence. I\u2019ve always been a fan of TV theme songs, going back to the silly
\u201cseries explaining\u201d songs of \u201cThe Beverly Hillbillies\u201d and \u201cGilligan\u2019s Island\u201d to the
power and poignancy of Mike Post themes, particularly on the Steven Bochco
shows [\u201cHill Street Blues,\u201d \u201cNYPD Blue\u201d].<\/p>\n

Do you think viewers will sample a series based on its opening theme\/credits?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have no idea whether a title sequence motivates viewers to check out a show,
or turn it off. My only goal has always been to use the 20-30 seconds to create
a mood and hopefully entertain.<\/p>\n

Was there something about the plotline of \u201cB Positive\u201d that lent itself to this animated approach?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The original idea was a montage of old black-and-white photographs from the early days of surgery, put to music. Somewhere along the way the doctors and patients in the photos started singing. It\u2019s a process.<\/p>\n

The opening credits are, to me at least, very reminiscent of Terry Gilliam\u2019s work on \u201cMonty Python\u2019s Flying Circus.\u201d Were you influenced by his avant-garde style?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When old photos speak or sing you\u2019re in Terry Gilliam-land. There\u2019s no way around it. Let\u2019s call it an homage.<\/p>\n

Did you have a specific animation house in mind to create the sequence?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We auditioned several title companies and decided on Grand Jet\u00e9 because they
brought a sense of humor to the work. I then proceeded to make them crazy,
going back and forth with version after version, until we found our way to what\u2019s
there now. (I belatedly decided to tone down the graphic bloodiness after we
started airing.)<\/p>\n

Did you audition musicians to perform the theme song or was Keb\u2019 Mo\u2019, who worked with you on \u201cMike and Molly,\u201d your first choice?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m a big fan of Keb\u2019 Mo\u2019 and was hoping to work with him from the outset. I originally sent him a half-baked musical structure which he wisely, and gently, threw out. We then went back and forth with ideas until settling on an old-style Mills Brothers approach \u2014 which fit nicely with the antique photographs.<\/p>\n

Keb\u2019 Mo\u2019 is a master musician, singer, songwriter, and producer. Writing and
producing with him made me as happy as I\u2019m likely to get. I don\u2019t know if our
theme will stand the test of time like \u201cJust sit right back and you\u2019ll hear a tale, a
tale of a fateful trip<\/a>,\u201d but I love it. (Check out the full-length version of the
