The neon lights are turning back on, on Broadway. Broadway is reopening this September with a string of mega-hits including\u00a0The Lion King<\/strong>, Hamilton<\/strong><\/em>, and\u00a0Wicked<\/em><\/strong> to bring audiences back into the theaters that have lay empty for the past year-plus.<\/p>\n

Broadway has been closed since last March, when the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic forced theaters on the Great White Way to close. Now the lights are blinking back on and the curtains are being raised to prepare for the grand Broadway reopening on\u00a0September 14, 2021<\/strong>. The shows that audiences can expect to see on Broadway on opening day are three of the stage\u2019s greatest biggest hits: Disney\u2019s\u00a0The Lion King<\/em>, the cultural phenomenon\u00a0Hamilton<\/em>, and the long-running Broadway staple\u00a0Wicked<\/em>. Joining them two weeks later will be Disney\u2019s\u00a0Aladdin<\/em>.
\nYou can expect to see\u00a0The Lion King<\/em> at Broadway\u2019s Minskoff Theatre, while\u00a0Aladdin<\/em> resumes performances at the New Amsterdam Theater on September 28. Tickets for all the aforementioned shows are on sale now. But if you buy tickets through Disney<\/a>, the House of Mouse is offering special ticketing benefits that take into account the unprecedented times we\u2019re in. Disney pays 100% of the Ticketmaster service and order fees and gives audience members the freedom to exchange or cancel tickets at no charge, up to the day of the performance.<\/p>\n

Producers of high-profile shows like\u00a0The Phantom of the Opera<\/em>,\u00a0Chicago<\/em>,\u00a0Come From Away<\/em>, and\u00a0Tina: The Turner Musical<\/em> also detailed their comeback plans, per The Washington Post<\/a>. Other musicals set to return between late September and the end of the year include Ain\u2019t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations<\/em>, Company<\/em>,\u00a0and\u00a0Mrs. Doubtfire<\/em>. Tickets are on sale for most of these plays.<\/p>\n

But you\u2019ll have to wait a little longer to find out reopening information about other hit musicals.\u00a0Dear Evan Hansen<\/em> is\u00a0expected to disclose its return plans soon. A few plays have been announced for the upcoming season,\u00a0including Antoinette Nwandu\u2019s Pass Over<\/em>, which has thus far been a success off-Broadway and in regional productions, and\u00a0Keenan Scott II\u2019s Thoughts of a Colored Man<\/em>. Neither has disclosed any dates.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, nonprofit groups Roundabout Theatre Company and Second Stage Theatre, which operate both Broadway and off-Broadway houses, have also unveiled their seasons. Second Stage includes the winner of the 2015 Pulitzer Price for drama,\u00a0Stephen Adly Guirgis\u2019s Between Riverside and Crazy<\/em>, while\u00a0Roundabout will feature a revival of Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori\u2019s musical Caroline, or Change<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes a week after\u00a0New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo lifted nearly all of the state\u2019s capacity restrictions on retail stores, movie theaters, museums, and of course, Broadway. While productions don\u2019t expect seats to start filling up immedia<\/a>tely, Broadway hopes to operate at 100% conventional capacity by September. For now, it\u2019s time for the actors and players to dust off those dancing shoes and get practicing.<\/p>\n
