\n After days of delay, Mayor Bill de Blasio laid out his plan to combat gun violence in New York City \u2014 by \u201ctaking back the block\u201d with some added cops but a heavy reliance on community members on the streets.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe<\/span> will<\/span> take<\/span> back<\/span> our<\/span> streets<\/span> in<\/span> Harlem<\/span> and<\/span> all<\/span> over<\/span> our<\/span> city<\/span> but<\/span> we\u2019re<\/span> going<\/span> to<\/span> do<\/span> it<\/span> from<\/span> the<\/span> ground<\/span> up,\u201d de Blasio said. \u201cWe are going to break the cycle of violence.\u201d
<\/br><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNow<\/span> starting<\/span> tonight,<\/span> you\u2019re<\/span> going<\/span> to<\/span> see<\/span> a<\/span> combination<\/span> of<\/span> things<\/span> happ<\/a>ening \u2026 <\/span>increased<\/span> NYPD<\/span> presence<\/span> at<\/span> hotspots<\/span> at<\/span> key<\/span> locations,<\/span> more<\/span> patrol<\/span> officers<\/span> on<\/span> foot<\/span> in<\/span> vehicles,<\/span> but<\/span> also<\/span> more<\/span> community<\/span> presence<\/span> because<\/span> that<\/span> is<\/span> the<\/span> key<\/span> to<\/span> this,<\/span> community<\/span> leaders,<\/span> committee<\/span> organizations<\/span> walking<\/span> with<\/span> police<\/span> officers<\/span> showing<\/span> common<\/span> cause,\u201d the mayor added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

De Blasio announced his \u201cTake Back the Block\u201d initiative Friday morning at a press conference after days of promising a plan to combat the gun violence following a bloody holiday weekend \u2014 and without anyone from the NYPD joining the briefing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have seen some really tough weekends, particularly last weekend and particularly in Harlem,\u201d de Blasio said. \u201cWe saw way too much violence and it\u2019s not something that\u2019s acceptable in this city. We cannot have people live in fear, we cannot have our young people in the cross hairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The plan appears to lean heavily on increasing the neighborhood watch, adding community members as \u201cviolence interrupters,\u201d opening up churches and putting clergy and faith-based outreach programs on the streets \u2014 as well as boosting police presence on more than 20 streets and in city housing complexes.<\/p>\n

The mayor did not elaborate on the level of police presence that would be added.<\/p>\n

De Blasio said the initiative is also aimed at engaging youth, with pop-up basketball events and a youth town hall.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to do better and this weekend coming up has to be better, particularly in Harlem, where we\u2019re focusing a lot of our efforts. Everyone agreed on a common vision, working together.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NYPD did not immedia<\/a>tely respond for comment as to how many patrols would be added.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
