However, the growth of Massospondylus depends on environmental factors such as diet and climate \u2014 a trait more commonly seen in plants. <\/p>\n<p>Massospondylus\u2019 sporadic growth pattern is illustrated best by its unique bone structure, which demonstrates \u201cgrowth rings,\u201d much like many tree species, according to the research, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1098\/rsbl.2020.0843\">published in Biology Letters on Wednesday<\/a>. In less fortunate seasons, however, Massospondylus would cut back on growth to conserve energy.<\/p>\n<p>Plateosaurus, a relative of Massospondylus, was thought to have grown with similar variability, a quality <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/310\/5755\/1800.abstract\">biologists call developmental plasticity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers point out that Massospondylus was among the first dinosaurs to be named and cataloged, after paleontologists discovered its fossils in the mid-19th century.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMassospondylus was one of the first southern African dinosaurs named back in 1854, and we are still learning so much from it,\u201d said Chapelle. \u201cIt teaches us so much about our past environments and what southern Africa was like 200 million years ago.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
