Google\u2019s antitrust woes continue to mount. Italy\u2019s\u00a0competition watchdog has fined the search giant \u20ac102 million ($123 million) for restricting access to Android Auto,\u00a0an in-car operating system for Android phones.<\/p>\n

The case stems from a complaint by energy company Enel X Italia, which makes an app<\/a> called JuicePass that allows users to find electric vehicle charging points \u2014 a service Google Maps also provides.<\/p>\n

The regulator<\/span>says<\/a> Google abused its market position by shutting out the rival app from Android Auto for more than two years:<\/p>\n

By refusing Enel X Italia interoperability with Android Auto, Google has unfairly limited the possibilities for end-users to avail themselves of the Enel X Italia app when driving and recharging an electric vehicle. Google has consequently favored its own Google Maps app, which runs on Android Auto and enables functional services for electric vehicle charging, currently limited to finding and getting directions to reach charging points, but which in the future could include other functionalities such as reservation and payment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In addition to the fine, the watchdog has ordered Google to make JuicePass available on Android Auto. It said that continuing to exclude the app \u201ccould permanently jeopardize\u201d Enel X\u2019s business, impoverish consumer choice, and impede the development of e-mobility.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, Google disagrees with the decision. A spokesperson for the company said, \u201cwe will now review our options.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
