Kenny Mayne has revealed further details about his \u201csalary cap casualty\u201d departure from ESPN.<\/p>\n

The longtime \u201cSportsCenter\u201d host says that he declined a contract offer that included \u201ca big pay cut to do essentially the same job.\u201d\u00a0The 27-year ESPN veteran\u2019s final app<\/a>earance on the network is scheduled for May 24.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey made an offer and I wasn\u2019t exactly flattered and decided to reject it,\u201d Mayne told The Athletic.<\/a> \u201cIt was a significant pay cut\u2026It was a 14 percent reduction in time worked and a 61 percent reduction in money earned. I thought the variance was too much.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not asking anyone to feel sorry for me. It\u2019s my choice to stay or not stay. It was still a good amount of money in the real world. I\u2019m not trying to frame this as woe for me. Nothing like that. I just think I can do better elsewhere. So I told them that I feel like you\u2019ve got a certain over-under on my worth and I\u2019m going to go play the over. They did not seem to care that I made that choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 61-year-old Mayne added that ESPN executives \u201cunderstood\u201d his decision, but they didn\u2019t attempt to negotiate a new deal with him. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t like, \u2018What would you take?\u2019 It was \u2018Here\u2019s your offer,\u2019\u201d Mayne said. \u201cI was surprised it went the way it went, but I\u2019m OK with it. I think they might have done me a favor, actually. There are other things out there that might make me happier and might even be more lucrative.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not trying to rationalize the whole thing or trying to make myself, my wife or my kids feel better. It\u2019s like what I said on Dan [Le Batard\u2019s] show. It felt like a liberation week. My daughter said to me, \u2018Dad, you have been talking about this since I was like 9.\u2019 She\u2019ll be 22 soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayne added that one of the messages he received since the announcement, from former ESPN anchor and mentor Charley Steiner, particularly resonated.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe told me this fun little story about his father teaching him a lesson about what is success \u2014 when you feel comfortable with what you\u2019re doing and it has nothing to do with possessions or how much something is. It\u2019s just the ability to say no to something and go follow your heart to something else,\u201d Mayne said. \u201cNone of this is said with any malice. I wish them well. Most of my friends are there. I\u2019m not bitter or in some big battle with ESPN. It didn\u2019t work out for me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey made a choice. They put a number on my worth to them. I\u2019ve been pitching many other things and to do more things for them, and they weren\u2019t interested in those things. So it was just kind of time\u2026 Their deal wasn\u2019t good enough for me to have to take it. It was bad enough to not take it.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
