“#Teaching about critical race theory is ‘responsible’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Thursday said it is \u201cresponsible\u201d to teach about \u201csystemic racism\u201d as part of critical race theory, dismissing a proposal to tax endowments of elite universities that teach it to be put toward vocational training.<\/p>\n

Psaki was asked about a proposal by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) that would place a 1 percent tax on the value of the endowments of the country\u2019s wealthiest schools, and put that money toward training for working-class jobs.<\/p>\n

The reporter noted Cotton\u2019s opposition to schools teaching subjects like the 1619 Project and critical race theory, which claims the consequences of slavery continue to be present in all levels of social<\/a> interaction.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think we would think that educating the youth and next and future leaders of the country on systemic racism is indoctrination. That\u2019s actually responsible,\u201d Psaki said.<\/p>\n

Cotton introduced his legislation, called the \u201cIvory Tower Tax Act of 2021,\u201d<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur wealthiest colleges and universities have amassed billions of dollars, virtually tax-free, all while indoctrinating our youth with un-American ideas. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis bill will impose a tax on university mega-endowments and support vocational and app<\/a>renticeship training programs in order to create high paying, working-class jobs,\u201d Cotton said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The bill says the funds should be used to support\u00a0apprenticeship programs registered under the National Apprenticeship Act.<\/p>\n

In 2020, Cotton introduced\u00a0the \u201cSaving American History Act of 2020\u2019\u2019<\/a> that would prohibit federal funds from being used by schools to teach the 1619 Project.<\/p>\n

In it, Cotton claims that an \u201cactivist movement\u201d is spreading the idea that America was not based on the Declaration of Independence, but on slavery.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis distortion of American history is being taught to children in public school classrooms via the New York Times\u2019 \u20181619 Project,\u201d which claims that \u201cnearly everything that has truly made America exceptional\u201d grew out of slavery.<\/p>\n

The bill goes on to call the project a \u201cracially divisive\u201d revision of US\u00a0history that\u00a0\u201cthreatens the integrity of the Union by denying the principles on which it was founded.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bill is in committee.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
