{"id":249310,"date":"2021-05-14T03:49:31","date_gmt":"2021-05-14T00:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/macleans-earns-17-national-magazine-awards-nominations\/"},"modified":"2021-05-14T03:49:31","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T00:49:31","slug":"macleans-earns-17-national-magazine-awards-nominations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/macleans-earns-17-national-magazine-awards-nominations\/","title":{"rendered":"#Maclean&#8217;s earns 17 National Magazine Awards nominations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Maclean&#8217;s earns 17 National Magazine Awards nominations<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                            Writers, editors, designers and photographers were all nominees\u2014and Maclean&#8217;s is also up for best magazine\n                        <\/div>\n<div>\n                                                                        When the National Magazine Awards released the list of finalists for its 2021 awards,\u00a0<em>Maclean\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>was nominated in 13 different categories that honour feature and profile writing, columns, photojournalism and design\u2014every corner of the magazine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>room.\u00a0<em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em> is also up for best magazine in the news, business and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> interest category.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a year when current affairs magazines really had to step up,\u201d said Alison Uncles,\u00a0<em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0Editor-in-<wbr\/>Chief. \u201cI\u2019m so proud of\u00a0<em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0writers, editors, designers and photographers for producing journalism worthy of the pandemic\u2019s historic moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scroll down to see the work that was nominated by the judges, our peers who work across the industry.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>In the wake of George Floyd\u2019s killing,\u00a0<em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0asked Black Canadian writers\u00a0Desmond Cole,\u00a0Andray Domise,\u00a0Esi Edugyan,\u00a0Lawrence Hill,Sandy Hudson,\u00a0Eternity Martis,\u00a0Rinaldo Walcott\u00a0and\u00a0Ian Williams\u00a0to pen open letters to America addressing the recent upheaval and the task of confronting racism that\u2014deny it as some Canadians might\u2014persists in their own country.<\/p>\n<p>That collection of letters was nominated for <strong>best editorial package<\/strong>, and our July 2020 issue was nominated for <strong>issue grand prix<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As Canada struggled through a punishing first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the cover of our June 2020 issue reflected the stark images in hospitals across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The cover produced by art director Stephen Gregory, director of photography Liz Sullivan and photographer Dawn Lim, which captured a scene at Toronto General Hospital a month into the pandemic, is nominated for\u00a0<strong>cover grand prix.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Six feature stories were nominated across various writing categories.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Wells\u2019s deep dive into the\u00a0doomed 30-year battle to stop the pandemic\u00a0is up for\u00a0<strong>long-form feature writing<\/strong> that runs at least 6,000 words. Sarmishta Subramanian\u2019s exploration of the end of economic growth as we know it is a finalist in\u00a0<strong>long-form feature writing<\/strong>. Three\u00a0<strong>features<\/strong> are in the running, including two written by Christina Frangou: \u201cA whole new kind of grief\u201c, on how the pandemic has disrupted death and mourning in ways we don\u2019t yet understand; and \u201cStealing time\u201c, on how strict COVID-19 protocols left seniors lonely and depressed.<\/p>\n<p>Emily Baron Cadloff is also nominated for her look at how the tiny town of Portapique, N.S., <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.macleans.ca\/article\/2020\/6\/1\/it-should-not-define-us\">hopes to recover from its horrifying moment<\/a> as the epicentre of Canada\u2019s worst mass shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Stephen Maher\u2019s stirring defence of Canada\u2019s equalization system is nominated for <strong>short feature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Wells netted a second nomination for his <strong>columns<\/strong>, including a forceful demand that governments in Ottawa and Nova Scotia stop dithering and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>oint an independent public inquiry into the massacre at Portapique.<\/p>\n<p>Four\u00a0<em>Maclean\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>writers earned nods for <strong>profile writing<\/strong>. Jason Markusoff penned a definitive look at the troubled third term of Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi.\u00a0Shannon Proudfoot and Nadine Yousif showed readers how\u00a0Abbas Saadat coped with the tragic loss of his wife and two daughters aboard Ukrainian International Airlines Flight PS752. Leah McLaren tracked down Mark Carney in the final days of his tenure as governor of the Bank of England and quizzed him on his future back in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Our December 2020 cover story told the tale of Thomas Chan, who at 19 years of age killed his father\u2014and whose case was headed to the Supreme Court in one of the most polarizing legal challenges in a generation. Photographer Clay Stang\u2019s work is nominated for\u00a0<strong>portrait photography<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, Tom Cheney wrote about the plight of North Atlantic right whales. When they migrated north for summer feeding, pandemic restrictions hampered critical research\u2014but could also have helped keep the whales alive. Nick Hawkins captured unforgettable images that are nominated for\u00a0<strong>photo essay and photo journalism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Jason Markusoff visited a block of Edmonton\u2019s Whyte Avenue that would normally be bustling to tell the tale of how small businesses were faring in the middle of a pandemic. He found as many stories as there were storefronts. Amber Bracken shot the photos, which were retouched by Drew Maynard.
