Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> for foreign journalists on April 19, 2021.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">EPA<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOur analysis builds on previous work and provides compelling evidence that Chinese government\u00a0policies\u00a0in\u00a0Xinjiang\u00a0may constitute an act of genocide,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>The ASPI report said\u00a0birth\u00a0rates\u00a0in counties with a 90 percent or greater indigenous population declined by an average of 56.5 percent from 2017 to 2018, far more than other regions in\u00a0Xinjiang\u00a0and\u00a0China\u00a0during the same period.<\/p>\n<p>Fines, internment, or the threat of internment, were among the methods used by authorities to discourage\u00a0births, it said.<\/p>\n<p>There have been growing calls among some western states for an investigation into whether Beijing\u2019s actions in\u00a0Xinjiang\u00a0amount to genocide.<\/p>\n<p>The United States government and parliaments in countries including Britain and Canada have described\u00a0China\u2019s\u00a0policies\u00a0in\u00a0Xinjiang\u00a0as genocide.<\/p>\n<p>According to the 1948 UN Genocide Convention, there would need to be proof of intent by Beijing to destroy an ethnic population in part to meet that determination.<\/p>\n<p>Rights groups, researchers, former residents and some western lawmakers say\u00a0Xinjiang\u00a0authorities have arbitrarily detained around a million\u00a0Uyghurs and other primarily Muslim minorities in a network of camps since 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing initially denied the camps existed but has since said they are vocational training centres designed to combat religious extremism, and that all people in the centres have \u201cgraduated\u201d.\u00a0\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
