NASA\u2019s\u00a0Perseverance Mars rover\u00a0is using its\u00a0robotic arm\u00a0to search for signs of\u00a0ancient microbial life.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The rover, which landed in\u00a0Jezero Crater in February, had been functioning largely as a communications base between the\u00a0autonomous Ingenuity Mars helicopter\u00a0and the agency\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) over the last couple of weeks, helping to document the\u00a0rotorcraft\u2019s historic flights<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, NASA scientists have continued to work in an effort to better understand the red\u00a0planet\u2019s\u00a0environmental\u00a0history, aiming to create a timeline surrounding when\u00a0the crater\u2019s lake formed and dried billions of years ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In order to do so, the arm\u2019s WATSON\u00a0(Wide Angle Topographic Sensor for Operations and Engineering) camera has captured detailed shots of\u00a0Martian rocks\u00a0and the Mastcam-Z cameras have reportedly also studied the rocky terrain.<\/p>\n

In March,\u00a0NASA released audio recordings<\/a>\u00a0in which the SuperCam instrument\u2019s laser can be heard impacting or \u201czapp<\/a>ing\u201d rock targets to detect their\u00a0chemistry.<\/p>\n

According to a Tuesday release<\/a>, one of the questions researchers want to answer is whether the\u00a0Mars rocks\u00a0are sedimentary or have been formed by\u00a0volcanic activity<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While igneous rocks are reportedly \u201cmore precise geological clocks\u201d that will help to create an accurate timeline, sedimentary rocks are better at preserving\u00a0biosignatures.<\/p>\n

Though harsh winds, sand and dust have complicated the process, NASA said the rover\u2019s arm can help to better understand rocks\u2019 histories by using an abrader to wear away a rock\u2019s surface and reveal its internal composition.<\/p>\n

Next, the team can gather more chemical and mineralogical data using\u00a0instruments on the arm<\/a>\u00a0like the SHERLOC (Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman & Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals)\u00a0spectrometer\u2019s\u00a0ultraviolet laser and PIXL\u2019s (Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry)\u00a0fluorescence spectrometer and\u00a0high-resolution imager.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you look inside a rock, that\u2019s where you see the story,\u201d Perseverance\u2019s Project Scientist\u00a0Ken Farley said a statement.<\/p>\n

As the scientists examine more rocks and sediment, Perseverance will collect and cache samples for further study.<\/p>\n

The best samples collected will be stored in\u00a0special tubes and deposited on Mars before they can return to\u00a0Earth\u00a0during subsequent NASA and\u00a0ESA (European Space Agency)\u00a0missions.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
