Keegan-Michael Key is returning to his sketch comedy roots this weekend \u2014 and \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d is making damn sure he has a lot of hype to live up to.<\/p>\n

It all started with the jokey video promo dropped Thursday night for the next episode of NBC\u2019s venerable late-night laugh fest: \u201cHi I\u2019m Keegan-Michael Key and I\u2019m hosting\u00a0\u2018SNL\u2019\u00a0with [musical guest] Olivia Rodrigo,\u201d announced Key, 50, who was a cast member on Fox\u2019s \u201cMad TV\u201d from 2004 to 2009.<\/p>\n

Cast member Kate McKinnon quickly jumps in to boast: \u201cYou gotta watch because Keegan promised the show\u2019s gonna be the best in 46 years,\u201d punctuated with some aggressive pokes to his broad shoulder.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I didn\u2019t promise \u2014 I said it\u2019d\u00a0be nice if it was,\u201d he replies, with McKinnon, 37, doubling down: \u201cNo, you said it. You promised. It\u2019s out there. Good luck.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a followup promo teased by ETOnline,<\/a> Netflix\u2019s \u201cThe Prom\u201d star reintroduces himself and McKinnon asks, \u201cDo you think you\u2019re gonna bring back any of your old characters?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, I kind of want to focus on the new stuff,\u201d Key replies \u2014\u00a0app<\/a>arently thinking that she\u2019s referencing his\u00a0\u201cMad TV\u201d bits or maybe something from his acclaimed sketch series<\/a> \u201cKey and Peele\u201d with co-star Jordan Peele, which aired on Comedy Central from 2012 to 2015.<\/p>\n

Cue the stone-faced Kate takedown: \u201cSorry, I was talking to Olivia.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rodrigo is also<\/em> making her\u00a0debut on the iconic sketch comedy show.\u00a0However, the \u201cDrivers License\u201d singer was already the inspiration for a viral bit in February when breakout\u00a0\u201cBridgerton\u201d heartthrob\u00a0Reg\u00e9-Jean Page\u00a0hosted the show.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fans of the\u00a0Disney+<\/a>\u00a0original show \u201cHigh School Musical: The Musical: The Series\u201d have been\u00a0following the teen gossip\u00a0surrounding Rodrigo\u2019s hit single \u201cDrivers License,\u201d which they believe was inspired by an alleged love triangle between her and show co-stars Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter.<\/p>\n

Never a franchise to miss a trending moment, \u201cSNL\u201d dropped a ha-ha homage to Rodrigo\u2019s viral tune \u2014 only, it was set in a pool hall, with grown men engaging in the high drama of it all.<\/p>\n

The singer herself took notice of the bit \u2014\u00a0as the episode aired on the same day as her 18th birthday: \u201cDRIVERS LICENSE SNL SKETCH IS THE BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER IM SHAKING,\u201d Rodrigo\u00a0posted to Twitter<\/a>\u00a0at the time.<\/p>\n

NBC\u2019s official \u201cSNL\u201d account\u00a0immediately responded<\/a>: \u201chbd!!!!,\u201d joining the more than 300,000 fans who liked, retweeted and\/or commented on Rodrigo\u2019s original tweet.<\/p>\n
