Randi Weingarten may be moving off her all-out resistance to school reopenings, but the powerful head of the nation\u2019s largest teachers\u2019 union is still betraying schoolchildren on another front by defending public schools\u2019 use of The New York Times\u2019 dishonest and dangerous 1619 Project.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an outrageous betrayal of academic standards \u2014\u00a0which the American Federation of Teachers once proudly stood for.<\/p>\n

Weingarten sparred this week on Fox News<\/a> with host Martha MacCallum about the 1619 Project, which touts that year \u201cas our true founding,\u201d as it\u2019s when the first slave arrived on our shores.<\/p>\n

MacCallum noted that the project, led by the Times\u2019 Nikole Hannah-Jones, teaches kids to believe that \u201cthe country was founded on the basis of wanting to preserve slavery.\u201d Weingarten denied it: \u201cI\u2019ve had several conversations with Nikole Hannah-Jones, and I have not arrived at the same conclusion from her work as you have,\u201d she sniffed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not my conclusion,\u201d MacCallum retorted. \u201cThat\u2019s directly from their work.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Fox host is correct. Hannah-Jones has tried to backtrack, but the writer, who won a Pulitzer Prize for her piece launching the series<\/a>, has said the project declares \u201cour true founding is 1619 not 1776.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project holds that the American Revolution itself was fought chiefly to preserve slavery. \u201cOut of slavery,\u201d one Times editor wrote, \u201cgrew nearly everything that has truly made America exceptional: its economic might, its industrial power, its electoral system.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not true, of course, and many scholars, left and right, white and black, have loudly denounced the project\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n

And as MacCallum said, \u201cit would be wrong as a historian to want to teach them something that is not true,\u201d especially something that leads \u201cto teaching kids that we live in a systemically racist country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weingarten\u2019s response to this sensible point? Deflection to Fox\u2019s coverage of the 2020 race: \u201cI would hope that Fox would be just as focused on \u2014 let\u2019s get rid of the misinformation on this election.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nice try.<\/p>\n

And what a drop in standards \u2014\u00a0in teachers\u2019 union heads. \u201cPolicymakers and reformers,\u201d longtime AFT chief Al Shanker wrote in 1995, \u201chave gotten caught up in faddish and radical schemes\u201d and \u201cignore what is obvious to people who work in the schools\u201d: Without \u201chigh academic standards, which students are expected to meet and helped to meet, school programs become trivial and meaningless.\u201d<\/p>\n

But now Shanker\u2019s successor Weingarten doesn\u2019t dare call out a \u201cfaddish and radical scheme\u201d to teach children fundamental falsehoods for what it is. The AFT now stands for nothing except its members\u2019 most selfish interests.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
