“#Trevor Noah ripped for telling Israel to slow down Hamas attacks<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

No one is laughing at \u201cThe Daily Show\u201d host Trevor Noah \u2014 who is being ripped for suggesting that Israel should limit the intensity of its response to rocket attacks by Hamas.<\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael has one of the most powerful militaries in the world,\u201d Noah said Tuesday. \u201cThey could crush Gaza like that \u2026 and I know, I know that this is contentious, and I know that people are gonna hate me for this, but I just want to ask an honest question: If you\u2019re in a fight where the other person cannot beat you, how hard should you retaliate when they try to hurt you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Noah then compared the deadly conflict to a scrap between himself and his little brother. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs a person who has immensely more power, I had to ask myself whether my response to this child was just or necessary,\u201d he said. \u201cCould I find different ways to deal with this? Whether I felt aggrieved or not, or whether they were fighting fair, was almost irrelevant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noah\u2019s remarks and ill-chosen analogy led to a flood of criticism. <\/p>\n

\u201cJust so we have this straight: A country should accept a terrorist group launching deadly rockets at its civilian population because a comedia<\/a>n thinks that the terror group won\u2019t win?\u201d former New York Times opinion editor and writer Bari Weiss asked on Substack<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf there was no Iron Dome, and more Israelis were killed by Hamas, would it be okay with the Noted Military Strategist Trevor Noah for Israel to \u2026 try to stop the rocket attacks? How many dead Israelis are necessary for a response to be OK?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s early but that\u2019s going to be hard to beat for dumbest remark of the day,\u201d Washington Examiner Executive Editor Seth Mandel tweeted Wednesday<\/a> in response to Noah\u2019s remark. <\/p>\n

American Jewish Committee CEO David Harris took Noah to task in an open letter published<\/a> by The Times of Israel, accusing the South Africa-born comedian of viewing the conflict \u201cfrom the perspective of power ratios\u201d and \u201csimplistically suggesting the side with the higher number [of casualties] is somehow automatically granted victim status.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry, but your younger siblings were not plotting murder and wreaking societal havoc,\u201d Harris wrote. \u201cYou\u2019re ignoring the true nature of Hamas, the fact that it\u2019s been firing 1000s of missiles over the years, building cross-border terror tunnels, kidnapp<\/a>ing Israelis, and foregoing development in Gaza to focus on damaging Israel.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re downplaying the trauma of millions of Israelis rushing to bomb shelters, caring for the elderly and disabled, and comforting traumatized children,\u201d Harris continued, \u201cas rockets fly overhead today and could strike anywhere, even with the Iron Dome anti-missile system in place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jerusalem Post correspondent Lahav Harkov tweeted video<\/a> of Noah performing a stand-up routine appearing to justify South African police killing 34 striking miners in 2012. <\/p>\n

\u201cTear gas is a waste of time,\u201d Noah says in the clip. \u201cWhich strike has ever ended because of tear gas? Where have you ever heard that on the news<\/a>? \u2018And after the police deployed the tear gas, everybody went home\u2019 \u2014 no, it doesn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
