“#FX comedy ‘Breeders’ ends Season 2 on a dramatic note<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The FX comedy series<\/a> \u201cBreeders\u201d ends its sophomore season on a game<\/a>-changing dramatic note.<\/p>\n

Monday night\u2019s season finale (10 p.m. on FX) finds Paul (Martin Freeman) and his 13-year-old son, Luke (Alex Eastwood), at a seemingly insurmountable impasse after the previous episode, in which the normally placid Luke gave his father a bloody nose over Paul\u2019s ongoing anger issues \u2014 which threaten to also destroy his relationships with wife Ally (Daisy Haggard) and 10-year-old daughter Ava (Eve Prenelle). \u201cI think something\u2019s broken in the family,\u201d says Ally \u2014 and Paul agrees.<\/p>\n

\u201cBreeders,\u201d which jumped ahead six years from Season 1, was co-created by Freeman, Chris Addison and Simon Blackwell, who also created the British comedy \u201cBack\u201d and won two Emmys for his work on HBO\u2019s \u201cVeep.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blackwell, 54, spoke to The Post about this Monday night\u2019s episode and what\u2019s in store for the Worsley family going forward.<\/p>\n

The situation between Paul and Luke seems like a culmination of seeds that were planted in Season 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t necessarily the arc from the get-go. I think once we\u2019d seen how Paul parented, particularly with Luke\u2026we thought we would age the kids up six years and then it became inevitable that [Paul\u2019s] parenting a teenage boy would not work out \u2014 particularly with a boy like Luke, who\u2019s troubled and anxious. I had the idea, when we were finishing Season 1\u2026of Luke punching Paul. It\u2019s a very significant moment in a father and son\u2019s life when the son is strong enough and tall enough to hit his father. Suddenly there\u2019s this young man who can hurt you \u2014 and I thought it was interesting to play that and see all the repercussions. That moment, \u201cthe punch,\u201d was the only thing in my head for Season 2. Everything evolved around that detail.<\/p>\n

What effect will \u201cThe punch\u201d have on Ally and Paul\u2019s relationship?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think, in Season 2, you\u2019ve seen them as an even stronger couple than in Season 1; they\u2019ve had another six years to cement themselves as a unit and as a couple. I absolutely buy them as a couple on screen, which you don\u2019t always do for TV couples. They\u2019re very strong, and I think they need to be. They need an absolute solidity to get through this next phase of the family being broken and fractured. If we have a Season 3, I think we\u2019ll still feel the echoes of that punch\u2026nothing can ever be the same again, which means that Ally and Paul can\u2019t be the same again, but I think they will find a way to be a couple because they\u2019re so much in love and so solid and have been through a lot.<\/p>\n

For all his faults, Paul is very self-aware.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He\u2019s very moral. He knows when he\u2019s gone too far, but it doesn\u2019t stop him from going too far \u2014 that\u2019s his tragedy. When Luke\u2019s run off at the end of [last week\u2019s episode] and Ally tells Paul he made a bad mistake, Paul says, \u201cI know. I was angry. I went too far.\u201d He knows it; he knows he needs to step up to plate as a dad and the sacrifices he needs to make and the moral complexities of what\u2019s at stake. He knows it but he doesn\u2019t learn from it, and that\u2019s a horrible thing.<\/p>\n

Alun Armstrong, who plays Paul\u2019s father (Jim) makes me laugh out loud.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

He and Joanna Bacon [Paul\u2019s mother, Jackie] are based on my late parents. They\u2019re the easiest characters to write, because basically I just channel my parents. They say stuff [my parents] would\u2019ve said if they were around, and it\u2019s quite sweet. I feel like I\u2019m having a conversation with my late parents now because when I\u2019m writing [for Jim] I can hear my dad\u2019s voice\u2026and Jackie has sort of a South London accent, which was my mom\u2019s accent. It\u2019s spooky to see them on screen but also lovely to have that little bit of dialogue now that my parents aren\u2019t around anymore.<\/p>\n

Will there be another time-jump if the series returns for a third season?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We would cheat the viewers if we jumped forward: \u201cA lot of interesting stuff just happ<\/a>ened and now Luke is 19.\u201d We owe it to the audience to see how this plays out. Eve and Alex, who play Ava and Luke, are so good [that] it would be mad to not use them again. They\u2019re fantastic actors \u2014 we gave them such complicated material and they were so brilliant.<\/p><\/div>\n
