“#Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says if Walmart is open, schools should be too<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis says it\u2019s perfectly safe to send kids back to school this fall despite rapidly rising numbers of coronavirus cases in the Sunshine State \u2014 arguing that if Walmart was open, schools should be too.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m confident if you can do Home Depot, if you can do Walmart, if you can do these things, we absolutely can do the schools,\u201d he said Thursday during an app<\/a>earance in Jacksonville with US Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want our kids to be able to minimize this education gap that I think has developed.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he also noted that not all parents may agree with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cDifferent parents have different calculations. If a parent wants to opt for virtual education, they should absolutely be able to do that. We shouldn\u2019t be forcing them to do any types of decisions,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

DeSantis claimed that data showed the risk of the virus in children was low, and that the risk of hospitalization from the virus for those under 18 was \u201csubstantially less\u201d than for the flu.<\/p>\n

Dr. Deborah Birx of the Coronavirus Task Force said earlier this week that cases appeared low among children because so few had been tested.<\/p>\n

DeSantis made similar remarks a day earlier during an appearance on the Rush Limbaugh show, adding the reopening of fast food joints as another piece of evidence to back his theory.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy kids aren\u2019t school-age yet. I got a 3-year-old daughter, 2-year-old son, and a newborn daughter. And I can tell you if they were school-age, I would have zero concern sending them,\u201d he told Limbaugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith respect to the schools,\u201d DeSantis continued. \u201cWalmart, essential service. Home Depot, essential service. Fast food, essential service. How is it that the schools for our kids would not be considered an essential service? And I think it\u2019s vital. I think that they\u2019ve fallen way behind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Florida\u2019s Department of Health on Friday confirmed 11,433 new cases of COVID-19, the second highest single-day total recorded since the pandemic began in March, The Miami Herald reported.<\/p>\n

The highest 24-hour total recorded in the state was on Saturday, with 11,458 new cases.<\/p>\n

Florida now has 244,151 confirmed cases, and there were also 93 new deaths announced, raising the statewide death toll to 4,102, the paper reported.<\/p>\n

DeSantis dismissed the rising cases as a \u201cblip\u201d and told residents not to be afraid.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know we\u2019ve had a lot of different blips,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cWe\u2019re now at a higher blip than where we were in May and the beginning of June.\u201d<\/p>\n

And he also said that \u201cflattening the curve\u201d of coronavirus cases, which experts call crucial to slowing the spread, was not all that it\u2019s cracked up to be \u2014 and claimed that doing so actually prolonged the outbreak in his state.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you have a flatter curve, which Florida has, if you look at the Northeast, they went boom,\u201d DeSantis said during an event in Orlando on Friday, FloridaPolitics reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cFlorida, Texas, we\u2019re just much flatter, it means it goes on longer. You said you wanted a flatter curve, but it\u2019s drawn out over a longer period of time \u2026 than if you had a boom or bust.\u201d<\/p>\n

Florida does not disclose the number of hospitalized COVID patients \u2014 but about 50 Florida hospitals reported their intensive care units reached full capacity this week.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
