“#Castlevania Season 4 with Samuel and Adam Deats<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Castlevania<\/span><\/i> has captivated its audience with its incredible animation and app<\/a>roach towards darker, adult animation. With Season 4 now available on Netflix, we had the special opportunity to speak with Samuel and Adam Deats, the director, and associate directors for <\/span>Castlevania<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Since you both are very familiar with <\/b>Castlevania,<\/i><\/b> how do you maintain the balance between the creative process and keep elements related to <\/b>Castlevania<\/i><\/b> present?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Adam<\/b>: I feel like the shell of the game<\/a>s are there in some capacity, and I think that\u2019s what Sam and the crew managed to do. On his end, it\u2019s making sure that the character designs feel like they\u2019re integrated into the <\/span>Castlevania <\/span><\/i>world along with the backgrounds. Most people, when they think of <\/span>Castlevania<\/span><\/i>, they think about Ayami Kojima\u2019s work because it\u2019s just incredible. It\u2019s the most easily recognizable, and, I think on my end, I was really excited to make sure that every room, if I could manage, felt like there was just a hint of <\/span>Castlevania.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

It also wasn\u2019t just me, the background artist. [Sam and his team] would talk to me about ideas all the time, like, \u201cWhat if we put this item on the shelf?\u201d or \u201cWhat if this crest was sitting on the floor?\u201d and so on. I think doing this makes [<\/span>Castlevania<\/span><\/i>] feel integrated into the video game world.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Samuel (Sam)<\/b>: We occasionally jump in and try to make suggestions about including things. Season 3 included the Legion. Having all these demons from Hell come out of the portal that Trevor and Sypha are dealing with was something that we brought to the table. [It] just felt right for what was going on in the story, and visually bringing it to life in something that feels like [what] you would expect [in] <\/span>Castlevania.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I heard a lot of work that went in from Legion with Season 3 with the bodies. What was your favorite element that you wanted to incorporate in Season 4 or was the most challenging sequence you had to work this season?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Adam<\/b>: There\u2019s been so many, but this season was the most complex season we\u2019ve ever worked on. It has a lot of different actions all crammed into one season and many of them, scale-wise, are huge.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m not gonna spoil anything, but guys \u2014 every time you watch a crowd-based sequence, it is the worst nightmare of our lives. They\u2019re so hard to work on. Just having to animate individual characters like that at a large scale is pretty tough.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019d also say that we have some very big and interesting villains. One of them was very, <\/span>very <\/span><\/i>hard to animate and took a lot of time to get right.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sam<\/b>: Episode 9 of Season 4 is the hardest episode we\u2019ve ever worked on by a lot.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Adam<\/b>: Extremely difficult!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sam<\/b>: We\u2019re trying to land not only on a ton of action animation, really difficult set pieces, and a lot of 3D backgrounds that are moving around, but we also have some really important and dramatic beats that just had to be nailed. The animation had to be the best that we could do. It took a ton of animators and a ton of time to really nail all those really difficult moments in that particular episode.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
