Economy watch: Beware Joe\u2019s Inflation Tax<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe invisible tax of rising inflation will do far more to harm working and middle-class Americans\u201d than President Biden\u2019s proposed tax hikes, fears Kristin Tate at The Hill<\/a>. \u201cInflation has reached its highest point in years, and will likely reach the highest in two generations.\u201d Prices for everything \u2014 food, gas, lumber, homes, cars \u2014 are up and expected to get even higher. What\u2019s fueling inflation? The Federal Reserve\u2019s massive printing of money and government spending. \u201cThe Fed nearly doubled its bond purchases since the beginning of the pandemic, pumping almost $4 trillion into the economy.\u201d Worse, the government doesn\u2019t seem concerned. \u201cThe president app<\/a>ears bound to repeat many of the most painful mistakes\u201d of the 1970s \u2014 \u201cmistakes that led to increased economic dysfunction\u201d and \u201ca severe series<\/a> of recessions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Education desk: The Kids Keep Losing<\/strong><\/p>\n

The city Department of Education\u2019s cancellation of Christopher Columbus Day touched off a \u201csquabble,\u201d but the holiday got renamed and there will be no classes that day \u2014 though, warns City Journal\u2019s Bob McManus<\/a>, fewer classroom days is \u201cthe last thing\u201d kids need after COVID. Then again, \u201cquality instruction was hard to find even before the pandemic.\u201d And it\u2019s not surprising that Columbus-cancellation passes for substantive policy debate: \u201cNobody has a stomach for real issues,\u201d such as \u201cthe fact that a vast majority of the city\u2019s African-American students come from single-parent households, that most Asian students do not \u2014 and that this, rather than racial bias, doubtless drives disparate academic outcomes.\u201d No, \u201cit\u2019s easier to cancel Christopher Columbus and continue with business as usual.\u201d Even if \u201cthe kids lose.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: GOP Fate Rests on Trump<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cSometime in 2023, Donald Trump will presumably make the most momentous decision by a single person affecting the fate of the Republican Party in decades\u201d: whether to run for president again, writes Rich Lowry at Politico<\/a>. \u201cThat will determine who\u2019s the frontrunner (obviously Trump, if he\u2019s a go)\u201d and \u201cthe internal GOP debate.\u201d If does he run, he\u2019ll presumably \u201cblot out the sun.\u201d Yet while Trump\u2019s \u201ccontinued sway has been a boon to Trumpists,\u201d it\u2019s \u201ca problem for Trumpism, at least if that term is to mean anything more than personal loyalty to the man himself.\u201d Why? Because it \u201crisks overshadowing and distorting the development of the populist wing of the party\u201d \u2014 which \u201cshould be about more than Stop the Steal and adherence to one man.\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: Gas Shortages Are Temporary<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thanks to hackers who \u201cseized control of a major pipeline\u201d in the Southeast, thus cutting off gasoline supplies, some motorists saw some gas stations \u201crun dry\u201d \u2014 yet there\u2019s really no need for panic, assures Josiah Neeley at Reason<\/a>. \u201cThe Colonial Pipeline hiccup has reminded us just how important our often-invisible infrastructure is to our daily lives,\u201d but \u201cexisting gasoline stocks in most places should be sufficient to cover a week or two\u2019s worth of demand, by which point the pipeline should be operational again.\u201d Also noteworthy: \u201cGovernment restrictions on energy infrastructure such as pipelines\u201d can worsen such problems. But the disruptions we\u2019ve seen, \u201cwhile annoying, don\u2019t signal an imminent \u2018Mad Max\u2019-style future for America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Prez Is Wrong Across the Board<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cGovernment figures show that the Biden administration is getting it wrong on the border, getting it wrong on the economy and job creation and getting it wrong on inflation,\u201d marvels National Review\u2019s Jim Geraghty<\/a>. President Biden says the surge of migrants at the border happens every year, but it\u2019s \u201ca load of bull.\u201d On April 30, Biden said March\u2019s numbers were \u201cway down,\u201d that he\u2019d \u201cgotten control\u201d \u2014 yet April\u2019s numbers topped \u201cthe previous month\u2019s record.\u201d Meanwhile, inflation hit 4.2 percent before seasonal adjustment, the largest 12-month hike in prices since 2008. Car and truck prices rose a whopping 10 percent in April, the largest one-month spike in 68 years.<\/p>\n
