They offer a step-up in quality from smartphone cameras while normally being more affordable and less cumbersome than a DSLR or mirrorless camera.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Point-and-Shoot_vs_Smartphone_Cameras\"><\/span>Point-and-Shoot vs. Smartphone Cameras<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Point-and-shoot cameras make up a pretty broad category, which encompasses everything from the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-Camera-Stabilization\/dp\/B019UDHT6U\/?tag=hotoge-20\">$150 Canon PowerShot ELPH 180<\/a> to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sony-Premium-Compact-1-0-type-DSCRX100M7\/dp\/B07VPQV7BY\/?tag=hotoge-20\">$1,300 Sony RX100<\/a>. They were <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.industryweek.com\/the-economy\/article\/21958929\/smartphones-crushing-pointandshoot-camera-market\">much more popular before smartphones took over the world<\/a>, but they still have a place in many photographers\u2019 pockets.<\/p>\n<p>There are two major problems with smartphone cameras:<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that smartphones can\u2019t take great photos in many situations, it\u2019s that they\u2019re limited by the fact that they also have to make phone calls and browse Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>Point-and-shoot cameras don\u2019t have the same problems. Because they\u2019re dedicated devices, they can use larger sensors without making other compromises. This means that you can get better image quality, especially in low light. Also, because their built-in lenses aren\u2019t required to be as thin, they can have wider, variable apertures and longer focal lengths. You also might need to spend several hundred dollars to get photos that are noticeably better than what you take with your phone in most instances.<br \/>\n If you\u2019re a photographer who\u2019s used to using a DSLR or another large camera, modern point-and-shoot cameras can still offer a lot. The 1\u2033 sensors in some high-end models <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kenrockwell.com\/sony\/rx100-vii.htm#perf\">offer image quality equal to that of entry-level DSLRs<\/a>, even though the sensor is physically smaller. Also, unlike most mirrorless cameras, plenty of point-and-shoot cameras genuinely fit in your pocket. If you love shooting with a \u201creal\u201d camera but don\u2019t want to lug one around, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/27528\/is-a-point-and-shoot-camera-still-worth-buying\/\">they\u2019re a great option<\/a>, especially since their built-in lenses tend to be versatile enough to replace multiple different ones.<br \/>\nThe biggest downside, of course, is that you have to buy another camera. There are also some situations where a point-and-shoot camera, no matter how good, won\u2019t stack up to a DSLR or mirrorless camera.
