Sen. Ron Johnson said the cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline that caused drastic fuel shortages across the eastern US is an \u201cexistential\u201d threat to the country\u2019s energy grid that could get worse if the Green New Deal becomes a reality.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are a fossil fuel fuel-based economy and will be a fossil fuel-based economy for decades,\u201d Johnson (R-Wisc.) told John Catsimatidis on his WABC 770 AM <\/a>radio show in an interview that aired Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to recognize that, harden our grid under that reality, and don\u2019t make ourselves more vulnerable with the Green New Deal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Johnson said the country should understand that the ransomware attack against the Colonial Pipeline exposes\u00a0\u201chow incredibly vulnerable our fuel grid is, our electrical grid is.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said President Biden\u2019s plan to adopt many of the proposals in the Green New Deal, which is backed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, could make the country\u2019s power grid even more vulnerable.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith everybody hooking up their solar panels and hooking into the grid so they can get a few shekels for the electricity they\u2019re selling into the grid, we become more and more vulnerable,\u201d he said, noting that it\u00a0will create \u201cmore points of\u00a0contact that cyber-attackers can exploit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe really need to change the direction we\u2019re headed in here,\u201d he continued. \u201cNo administration has paid sufficient\u00a0attention to the vulnerabilities of our electrical grid.\u201d
\u201cThis could be existential,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n

The gas shortages caused by the hacking of the Colonial Pipeline that sparked panic buying eased on Saturday but prices continued to rise.<\/p>\n

The pipeline, which supplies about 45 percent of the gasoline and jet fuel to the east coast, was taken offline after a cyberattack by DarkSide, the US intelligence community said.<\/p>\n

Reports said the company paid a $5 million ransom.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
