Dan Stevens<\/strong> and\u00a0Betty Gilpin<\/strong>\u00a0have boarded the cast of Starz\u2019s upcoming Watergate drama series<\/a>,\u00a0Gaslit<\/em><\/strong>, described as \u201ca modern take\u201d on the Watergate scandal that brought down President Richard Nixon. The respective stars of Legion<\/em> and Glow<\/em> will join an\u00a0ensemble that already includes Sean Penn<\/strong> and Julia Roberts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Wrap<\/a> reports that Gilpin and Stevens have both joined the\u00a0Gaslit<\/em> cast to play \u201cinfamous\u201d couple Mo and John Dean, the \u201cyoung duo who were wrapp<\/a>ed up in the political scandal while John was serving as a White House lawyer under the Nixon administration.\u201d Also joining the cast alongside Gilpin and Stevens are\u00a0Shea Whigham<\/strong> (Kong: Skull Island) as G. Gordon Liddy and Darby Camp<\/strong> (Big Little Lies<\/em>) as Marty Mitchell, who will both be series regulars.
\nBased on Slate\u2019s\u00a0Slow Burn<\/em> podcast<\/a>,\u00a0Gaslit<\/em>\u00a0is a\u00a0modern take on Watergate that \u201cfocuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters of the scandal \u2013 from Nixon\u2019s bumbling, opportunistic subordinates, to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes, to the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taking the lead are Sean Penn as Richard Nixon\u2019s loyal attorney general<\/a>, John Mitchell, and Julia Roberts as Mitchell\u2019s Arkansan social<\/a>ite wife, Martha, whose story is what kicks things off in the podcast. Like the podcast,\u00a0Gaslit<\/em> appears to focus on the behind-the-scenes stories that fell by the wayside of the well-known Watergate scandal. As the official podcast synopsis states, \u201cYou think you know the story, or maybe you don\u2019t. But Watergate was stranger, wilder, and more exciting than you can imagine. What did it feel like to live through the scandal that brought down President Nixon? Find out on this eight-episode podcast miniseries hosted by Leon Neyfakh.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show has seen some turnaround since it was first announced last February.\u00a0Joel Edgerton was originally set to appear in the series and direct, but exited alongside his\u00a0brother\u00a0Nash Edgerton, who was going to executive produce. Also gone is Armie Hammer, who was going to appear in the show but has since left, presumably due to the same swirling controversy that found him leaving The Offer<\/em>. Hammer would\u2019ve played\u00a0White House Counsel John Dean, while Edgerton was set to play G. Gordon Liddy.<\/p>\n

Now Matt Ross<\/strong> is set to direct and\u00a0executive produce, alongside\u00a0Sam Esmail<\/strong> and Chad Hamilton<\/strong> of Esmail Corp. and Robbie Pickering<\/strong>, who will also serve as showrunner. Also executive producing are Roberts, under her banner Red Om Films, along with co-executive producers Lisa Gillan<\/strong> and Marisa Yeres Gill<\/strong>. Anonymous Content and Slate\u2019s Gabriel Roth<\/strong> and Josh Levin<\/strong> will also executive produce. Leon Neyfakh<\/strong>, who created the podcast, will consult on the project.<\/p>\n
