Bill Gates allegedly had an affair with a Microsoft employee \u2014 and the tryst was being probed by the company\u2019s board last year when Gates stepped down, a report said Sunday.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s board became aware in 2019 that a Microsoft engineer penned a letter alleging that she and Gates had a sexual relationship over the years, the Wall Street Journal reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The woman demanded changes to her Microsoft job and also asked that Gates\u2019 now-estranged wife Melinda read her letter \u2014 though it\u2019s unclear if that happ<\/a>ened.<\/p>\n

Board members hired a law firm to conduct an investigation into the relationship, the Journal said.<\/p>\n

During the probe, some members grew concerned about the allegation and decided that Gates, who founded the tech firm in 1975, should step down as director of the board.<\/p>\n

But the billionaire was still re-elected to Microsoft\u2019s board at the annual shareholder meeting, the report said. He resigned before the investigation could be completed, saying he wanted to focus on his philanthropy. <\/p>\n

\u201cMicrosoft received a concern in the latter half of 2019 that Bill Gates sought to initiate an intimate relationship with a company employee in the year 2000,\u201d a Microsoft spokesman said. <\/p>\n

\u201cA committee of the Board reviewed the concern, aided by an outside law firm to conduct a thorough investigation. Throughout the investigation, Microsoft provided extensive support to the employee who raised the concern.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokeswoman for Gates admitted that, \u201cThere was an affair almost 20 years ago which ended amicably.\u201d<\/p>\n

She denied that his decision to step down from the board was related to the affair, adding, \u201cIn fact, he had expressed an interest in spending more time on his philanthropy starting several years earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Microsoft came under fire in April 2019 after Quartz reported<\/a> on an email chain within the company where female employees shared stories of sexual harassment and discrimination.<\/p>\n

After the report, Chief Executive Satya Nadella announced that the company would change its process for handling employee complaints of harassment and discrimination. <\/p>\n

Nadella and other top executives were aware of the woman\u2019s allegations about having a relationship with Gates, according to the Journal. Gates still serves as a technical adviser to Nadella.<\/p>\n

The Journal\u2019s report comes after another on Sunday detailed how Gates \u201cpursued\u201d\u00a0several women in his office long after he wed now-estranged wife Melinda in 1994.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0New York Times reported <\/a>two instances where the\u00a0tech mogul clumsily asked out women who worked for him at Microsoft and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.<\/p>\n

The two incidents and other more recent ones at times created an uncomfortable workplace environment, with Gates\u2019 personal life becoming\u00a0gossip fodder among employees, six current and former staffers told the news<\/a>paper.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear how much Melinda knew about her husband\u2019s behavior.<\/p>\n

The couple said they were ending their 27-year marriage earlier this month, saying \u201cWe no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.\u201d\u00a0In a divorce petition, Melinda said their marriage was \u201cirretrievably broken.\u201d<\/p>\n

She reportedly hired divorce attorneys in 2019, after her husband\u2019s ties to pedophile Jeffrey Epstein were made public, setting in motion the couple\u2019s divorce announcement.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
